Ah the fabled cherry—the poetic color of luscious lips, and just as sweet. It started out in West Asia (perhaps the Persia-Armenia region) and in two varietals from which all cultivated cherries are descended: Prunus avium (sweet) and Prunus cerasus (sour).
Sweet cherries had spread to Ancient Greece and the Mediterranean by 300 BCE, for Theophrastus mentions them. And Pliny the Elder (1st century AD) mentions that some 8 varieties of cherries were being cultivated in Italy—and that the Romans were spreading them as far north as Britain. The British, in turn, carried it to the New World in the 17th century (Beyond the huge crops in Michigan, California, Oregon, and Washington, American wild cherries include the chokecherry, the pin cherry, and the wild black cherry. Sour cherries have spread even farther north, and are a speciality of Germany and Scandanavia.
Today it is estimated that some 900 sweet varieties (ranging in color from yellow to black) and some 300 sour varieties are being grown. Most sweet cherries will produce fruit only after they’ve been cross-pollinated—honey bees usually do the leg work, carrying pollen from a sweet cherry of another variety soupsong.com

You know how it is Bev, with watercolours… some days it is a big fight, and some days everything just flows as if it were meant to be… this was one of those days… I don’t know why, because I had no heat in the house, my hands were frozen, I was exhausted, and the furnace man was making an incredible racket while I painted… I just kept pouring water on the painting, he just kept passing by and saying “that looks great”... I felt like saying “no thanks to you”.. :))
In the end I was very happy with the results… it just goes to show that we can paint under any conditions…

These cherries seem to have turned out to be a universal favorite… the man fixing my furnace kept looking over my shoulder and commenting on the progress… it was not the best situation in which to paint, because he was making lots of noise, banging and clanging, the house was freezing and my hands were really cold… but I’m happy with the way they turned out despite the conditions under which I painted them…I am really pleased you like Linda… thanks so much…

I was brought up on a fruit orchard and apparently had some pretty gross nappies ( won’t get into that) – “No Grandpa I didn’t eat any cherries” – ( stained face, hands, clothes :) )

“Not” is the name of the type of surface the paper has, and refers to the fact that it is Not rough and Not smooth…it is a term used by paper makers and goes back centuries…

Food painting is my main “thing”...I enjoy painting food in all it’s guises, but I also do landscape and abstracts etc… you will see as you go through the pages, I paint in many different styles, depending on the series I’m working on at the moment….lately I’ve been collaboratinig with Diette Henderson and doing painted versions of her photos…

Absolutely gorgeous watercolor- Purple is perfect color for shadows/negative spaces. Love the way the green stems are place moving your eye around the watercolr also masterful use of white paper as a drawing/defining form element in lieu of pencil lines. Just superb!!!

Thank you so much Marilyn…this was one of those spontaneous ideas that happens to all artists, and the painting seems to flow from your brain out of your fingers….I had a furnace man here while I was painting constantly looking over my shoulder while I did this one and commenting, instead of fixing the furnace…
