Delicious ..Scone with Berries and Cream

In his sumptuous exploration of food images (Food in Painting), Kenneth Bendiner states, that ” food for the art historian can be the one area where conscious rules and dignified ideas need not hold sway - the real urges and concerns of a painter or his society can rise to the surface. There’s a certain freedom in the margins of art - where experiments and indulgence can operate—in other words more can be learned about someone from his backyard, than from the street façade of his house.”

The latest painting from the series” Delicious” is “Scone with Berries and Cream. The Berries are a type of black berry, available all year round here…

Watercolour on Arches Paper…Featured in Happy Haven…

I grew up in a society where tea time was sacrosanct… dashing into the house after school, at four o’clock in the afternoon straight to the table which tea was laid, was an everyday thing… the weather was hot and the tea was refreshing… after several cups, one felt at peace with the world. Clotted Cream came from England in jars or tins but my mother also whipped up a wonderful cream from the top of the milk that came straight to our home from a neighboring farm every day…dinner was much later on in the evening ...

You and I are great souls.
And we come together for a time.
We meet over a cup of tea here on earth
.

Shall we leave our shell and join with each other?
Shall we put down our shield and armor?
What will become of us if we do?
What horrible fate awaits us if we are defenseless
?

Tea is a time for love and tenderness without fear.
It is a time for sharing and learning and growing.
Come now, leave the battle gear behind.
Brave with me and let’s have tea
. E.Grey

Watercolour on Arches Paper..

One day through a half-shut gate
in a courtyard, there among the trees,
we can see the yellow of the lemons;
and the chill in the heart
melts, and deep in us
the golden horns of sunlight
pelt their songs*

The strawberry is rough like a slave’s arduous life
Vermillion, green, and fuzzy like an inscripted pathway
It tastes like the first candy bar in a child’s life
It looks like a cold soda on a hot summer day
Sounds like the Sirens decepting voice
.

Blueberries as big as the end of your thumb,
Real sky-blue, and heavy, and ready to drum
In the cavernous pail of the first one to come!
And all ripe together, not some of them green
And some of them ripe! You ought to have seen
...

You truly made my mouth water. You’re not helping me lose any weight you know. Everytime I see a painting out of this collection I end up getting something to eat. Beautiful work Janis.

  • Janis Zroback replied

Everyone has been saying that to me…I don’t want to be a cause of obesity… :))
I started to paint food a few years ago, then branched out into other subject matter, but in my heart and soul I am a food painter…a part of the long history that Bendiner so eloquently describes…for the past two winters I have done a major food series and created websites to support them…this is the one for 2009, so I’m afraid you will just have to tighten your belt Jim. :)))
I really appreciate all your great comments on the series….it has a different audience from my other paintings…I’m so pleased you are one of them….

this is a lovely series! Reminds me a lot of Wayne Theibaud’s work.

  • Janis Zroback replied

In the first painting in this new series of the Blueberry Tart, I wrote about Thiebaud’s food paintings, and what they meant to him and to his culture…I added a little thumbnail of his painting of cakes…
When I realized a few years ago, that painting food was my main interest, it was Cezanne who had the most influence on me…I knew little about contemporary food painters except for Warhol…since then I have been researching it a lot and Bendiner’s book is the most comprehensive study of the genre….I am thrilled to be part of this long history of wonderful food painters…
For the past two winters, I have done a major collection of food paintings, each collection very different from the last, with a special website and two blogs to display them…it gives me great joy to start another collection this year and I’m so glad you love it…thanks so much Amy…

It is my favourite too…you will love the Bendiner book…I am so pleased to have found another partisan…thanks again Amy…look for new work from me in this series…I am hoping to add new paintings amost everyday…there are some collectors of my original work who are waiting in the wings for more of these… :))

Sometimes some of the most expensive restaurants…...
One of the news channels does a “Dirty Dining” report once a week on the late news….....

  • Janis Zroback replied

Once in a while here, they close a restaurant temporarily for some sort of violation, but no matter what it is, the place never recovers….they always shut down for good..people just don’t want to go back…

oh Janis!!! Gorgeous!!! I love everything about what you’ve done here … your image … and the words you included!!! “Brave with me and let’s have tea … E. Grey” ... as in Earl Grey, I wonder?? I’m a prodigious tea drinker myself, and Earl Grey is my all time fave!! I am deeply and truly in love with this wonderful image … right down to the texture of the paper … the berries … they’re not an image on my monitor … they’re sitting there waiting for me to reach in and take them!!! Janis!! You are my hero!!!!!!

  • Janis Zroback replied

Oh Lois… I am so thrilled to to see that you love this series…. I put my heart and soul into my food painting…. I feel that this is what I was meant to do… I love it so much, and you absolutely made my day when I read your words… every year I do a collection of food paintings… I have clients who wait for this, and this year the portraits like this one will be a hit…
I know that many people here on RB love my landscapes and abstracts, I hope they will come to love these too…

Janis these are so lifelike, I need to lose some weight. We have our son and family over from the U.K. staying with us for another three weeks and two of them are chocoholics one of them being my granddaughter who is five tomorrow so inbetween outings siteseeing and birthdays I am going to spread!!! Have you done any sketches for cafes/restuarants?

  • Janis Zroback replied

I have not previously done anything for cafés or restaurants…. this is the first time that I’m doing specific food portraits like this… every year I try to do a main series of food paintings and this year I decided to do them the same way you do a portrait of a person… I like to celebrate food… it is part of everyone’s experience and I don’t think we should take it for granted… so these portraits are a celebration of food in all its glory…
I will be painting lots of things with chocolate… watch this page from now on…
I’m so thrilled that you like them… it really gives me the encouragement I need to keep posting them to Red Bubble…

  • Joanne Bradley

Well this one is all about communication and sharing isn’t it? Because as much as it would be a wonderful indulgence to have tea and scones on one’s own, there is nothing better than sharing the whole experience. One of the great legacies of British society, I wish we could revive it! They serve high tea at The Queen Elizabeth Hotel in downtown Montreal and that does it, I am definitely going to treat myself this spring! As much as the strawberries reminded me of my (French-Canadian) grandmother picking wild ones, this reminds me of my paternal grandmother, an English lady who served us older grandchildren cakes and scones and used her silver service to do so…
Yes scones and tea are symbols of civility but also that time with others as well…..

  • Janis Zroback replied

As always you hit the nail on the head Joanne…. there aren’t many poems written about food that are really good, and that I want to reproduce here and these days I have no time to write any myself. However when I found this one, I thought it would be perfect… it is all about sharing… mealtimes are ritual times and they’re always best if someone is there to share it with you… growing up, my family all sat together at meal times… the only time we weren’t altogether was during the day at school, but every other meal was taken together with no exception… Tea time was special… it was a time of the day when we shared with our mother what went on at school… a father wasn’t home yet he would be there for dinner, so teatime was just far mother on ourselves… she always had it waiting, teapot under the tea cozy and something good to eat.
In Toronto there are quite a number of places that serve tea. Many hotels to as well as restaurants and there is some restaurants that devote themselves to that special time in the afternoon when women want a break from shopping and they will serve scones and tea at that time…. but according to my husband the best tea is served right here at home…. :)))
Thank you so much Joanne for your great insight…

  • Joanne Bradley

The last line should have said: but also taking special moments for ourselves during the day and sharing a ritual with others….
