Delicious ..Lemon Curd and Blueberry Tart

Lemon Curd and Blueberry Tart” is part of the “Delicious” collection..Watercolour on Arches Not Paper…

Featured in Light in the Darkness….

This new series is definitely a reflection of my particular experience… it is at once a commentary on the richness of our culture and at the same time a reflection of my daily life…food is essential to life…suffice it to say we can’t exist with out it ...

Painting food has a long history and according to Kenneth Bendiner in the comprehensive “Food in Painting”, is a separate classification of Art…He “underlines the central importance of 16th century innovations in food subjects and the great influence of 17th century Dutch art in the development of food imagery”.
He explains, with examples of paintings by the likes of Rembrandt, Chardin, Manet, Warhol and many others, how “food images can be purely symbolic, surrealist, and an element in allegories…he also shows the optimistic, human centered Renaissance spirit of food painting, and the way abundance, success and fulfillment pervade this art”.

But the illusion fails, and time returns us
to noisy cities where the blue
is seen in patches, up between the roofs.
The rain exhausts the earth then;
winter’s tedium weighs the houses down,
the light turns miserly—the soul bitter.
Till one day through a half-shut gate
in a courtyard, there among the trees,
we can see the yellow of the lemons;
and the chill in the heart
melts, and deep in us
the golden horns of sunlight
pelt their songs

    Thank you so much Solomon …in the tradition of food painting, realism is the norm, but I like to keep it fairly painterly….

    Peaches, pears, oranges,
    strawberries, cherries, figs,
    apples, melon, honey dew,
    oh, music of my senses,
    pure pleasure of the tongue;
    let me speak now
    of fruit that fascinate,
    with the flavor, with the hues,
    with the fragrance of their syllables:
    oh tangerine, oh tangerine

  • Janis Zroback replied

    Thank you so much Linda…in the tradition of classic food painting, the subject matter is so real it looks like a photo, but I did not want to make it so real, it looked unreal, if you know what I mean….it’s a painting after all… :)) I’m so glad you like it.

    Mm, yum. I can almost taste the smooth but citrus tang of the tart. I had no idea that there were so many colours in blueberries – you’re so clever. Now, do me a painting of ice-cream because it’s been SO hot here (>40 celsius!).

  • Janis Zroback replied

    I keep hearing how hot it is where you are…we are the exact opposite…freezing…
    I am planning on doing ice cream…just have to figure out the style of it…bowl or cone or what…I have buyers who want it as well, to round out the series…I’m so pleased you like the collection and are coming by to comment…thank you so much.
    Have you received your prints yet? ..I would love to see a picture in the buyers booth when you do….

  • bevanimage

    bevanimage

    Yes Janis I have received the prints, and they look wonderful – I’m really enjoying looking at them. One of the few things it’s been possible to do in the extreme heat we’ve been having. Even the possums and birds are dying. The only problem is that the laminate makes photographing them very difficult, because of reflections from the plastic surface. Having eliminated all the reflections I found myself in total darkness! Try again, and I will when it gets a bit cooler.

  • Janis Zroback replied

    If you have an ISO feature on your camera, you should be able to take the pictures without glare showing up…that’s the one I use for my acrylic paintings and it seems to work, but you probably know better than I as I am not an expert in photography…

  • Joanne  Bradley

    You know Janis, I must be honest and tell you that I have not really appreciated food images in the past and would not have beleived I would so like this food art until now! But it is just so great! This series really appeals to me at a gut level! As soon as I see the thumbnail I smile! The simplicity of composition, the realistic portrayal of the food, the vibrancy of the colors, and wholesomeness of the fruit is just so appealing! It definitely speaks of comfort! :-)

  • Janis Zroback replied

    Joanne I must get you to write my publicity blurbs, or even the preface the book I am planning for these images, when the collection is complete….
    You are a genius at getting to the heart of the matter, and always speak so eloquently in the comments you make on on my work….I could not have described my idea for the series better than you did in that last sentence…may I quote you? :))

    That statement is exactly what the paintings are all about….the feelings I want to evoke in people are ones of comfort, of satisfaction, reminiscence, passion etc….everything that makes you feel good when you view a piece of art…on a deeper level, the works talk about us, our culture, the things we love, the memories we treasure…this is why I paint them the way I do…as portraits…realistic yes, but not so real that the brush strokes disappear ..

    I want to keep the artist’s hand very obvious, and also to give the viewer the an opportunity to add something of themselves when the view the work..
    I am thrilled to hear that they resonate with you…when you get a moment, pick up the book by Kenneth Bendiner, “Food in Painting”, which was an eye opener, even to me, as I thought that I knew so much about the genre…it has a very long history, and I can’t deny that if left to myself, that is all I would paint…. the feelings I get, of peace, of great satisfaction, of “this is what I was meant for”, that I get when I’m doing a food painting is unsurpassed by any other work I do…

    Thank you so much for always taking the time to comment so fully on the work and to express your feelings about each piece…I deeply appreciate every word you write..but especially about this collection, that is so dear to my heart.
