Delicious ..Strawberry Tart

Strawberry tart is the second in the series “Delicious”... Watercolour on Sennelier Not Paper…
In the description that accompanied “Blueberry Tart” I referred to the work of a famous American artist called “Wayne Thiebaud”, who stated that his subject matter came out of a genuine experience from his life, from the American world, in which he was privileged to be. He went on to say that it was the most genuine thing which he had done. His subject matter is a commentary on the abundance that is a part of American society and the longings and desires ( e.g. all those cakes in a row) that go along with it.
Like Thiebaud, this new series is definitely a reflection of my particular experience… it is at once a commentary on the richness of our culture and at the same time a reflection of my daily life… in addition to being a painter, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen… my belief is that since I have to cook to feed my family I had better do it well, (I have an abhorrence of wasted time), so to that end I have almost as many cookbooks as art books, in fact I have a collection of several hundred cook books… I have mentioned before, that there is a peacefulness, a feeling of rightness when I sit down to paint food… although all painting brings me pleasure, there is a special joy when I paint food… it is as though it is what I was meant to do ...
The strawberry is rough like a slave’s arduous life
Vermillion, green, and fuzzy like an inscripted pathway
It tastes like the first candy bar in a child’s life
It looks like a cold soda on a hot summer day
Sounds like the Sirens decepting voice J. Macgregor

I’m so glad you like both the painting and the tarts…I will be doing a lot more cooking for my painting in the next while, so my family are all primed to eat a lot of desserts while this series continues…thank you so much…

how delicious!!! Gosh, some delicious flavors just ooooozing out!
Janis Zroback replied
Just out of the oven….but this series means a whole lot more to me than just that…it’s a symbol of my life as a whole…many things that I paint are from my imagination…this is real…that’s why there is no embellishment and the white of the paper is very significant…thanks so much Solomon..I’m very happy you like it.

As sweet as the song of a Blue Jay in the tall oak trees
Smells like a new blossomed rose on a luke-warm spring day
Inside the strawberry is sweet like cotton candy at the State Fair
Smooth like the back end of a bowling ball
Tastes as sweet as winning your first football game against the best in state
Looks like a glass of water after a trip from the desert with no supplies
And smells like the bakery in the early morning Jacob McGregor-

its always amazing to see how we as artists, can find inspiration in simple things within our surroundings…very inspiring to see.
Janis Zroback replied
In the past I painted mostly what I knew best, but others could not relate, as it was so personal…. I paint for a very wide audience now …I think I am slowly drifting back to that earlier place, in between all the rest…after all, painting should be first and foremost for the artist, and then for the audience, if there is one. If not, then you are not being true to your soul…
Solomon Walker
for sure….there are enough commercial type stuff in the marketplace already, so its fitting to focus on that which we hold dear to reproduce on canvas…
Linda Callaghan
yep sure is delicious Janis….can’t you see me drooling…fabulous !
Janis Zroback replied
Thank you so much Linda…this series means a whole lot to me…
Jim Phillips
I am falling in love with this series Janis. Gorgeous work.
Janis Zroback replied
I am so happy to hear that…I’m really glad to have your support..
While you were away, one of my paintings of peaches, done in this same style, made it to the Home Page…..another that I painted of trees with a large expanse of white background has had so many features, won challenges etc. that I know there are lovers of this style out there…that being said, it is the kind of thing that gives me the most satisfaction, so even if there wasn’t, I would continue anyway…
I know many people like my intense coloured textured work and I do too, but the feeling of peace and tranquility that I feel when painting this series can’t be matched by any of the other collections…my heartfelt thanks Jim…you encourage me to do more..

You are an amazing artist. Did you eat the tart afterwards . I’m off to the bakery.
Janis Zroback replied
My family certainly did… :)) thank you so much Cathy Jane…I’m so glad you like it…

Janis Zroback replied
But there will be no harm in mine…right? :)) thank you Kj…I’m glad you like the painting…

I remember once being told by an Artist Guru to show work with a black background…..........

Black really makes the painting pop….........
Janis Zroback
Thanks KJ….hmn….I wonder who that was?
I have shown all my other work so far, framed in black, but this time I was making a certain statement about the subject matter in this particular painting…secondly I was showing a viewer/client who has expressed interest in the series and wants white so as to extend the background….he wants to see only the image on his white walls as if there were no frame..he will have a grouping of them…

Ah the strawberries are just too delicious! I can smell them! :-) What a beauttiful overflowing bowl. It makes me think of picking berries with my grandmother when I was little. At the cottage we would pack a light lunch, take out the boat and go to secret places that my grandmother knew to fill our baskets with wild strawberries and often eat as much as we picked. I love your lighting on this and the simple abundance that is portrayed of something that is essential in life and by its very essence adds to the joy and comfort of our daily lives without great infusions of money….well I guess that depends on the time of year…..sorry, this one made me philosophical…As for black backgrounds there are groups devoted to white in photography called high key, I think both colors serve the same purpose….
Janis Zroback replied
I’m really thrilled that you like this series Joanne..it is very dear to my heart and echoes my works on canvas…this collection is the essential me and expresses who I am as a painter, much more than my abstracts or landscapes or any of my other collections…
I plan to put them into a book….food is essential to life and is a part of everyone’s experience…
I love the story you tell of your grandmother…art should spark these memories…by leaving out the background, I hope the works will trigger different feelings in each viewer….
Please keep on looking and let me know your feelings about each one…I hope they raise many other pleasant memories for you…thank you so much..
Corinne Pouzet
Janis, this is a top painting…I like everything in it…you’ve got probably a sweet tooth and good on you, I am the same !
Janis Zroback replied
Welcome Corinne…I do have a sweet tooth, but I try to limit eating a lot of what I make….I would be huge….I make it, I paint it, and it goes to family or guests…
I’m so pleased you like my work…food painting is a special category of painting with it’s own history, and it’s my favourite subject matter…this new series has three paintings already and I will be adding more as the days go by…glad you stopped by to view and comment…
daveivey
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is great! A really nice piece. DI
Janis Zroback replied
Thank you so much Dave… I will take that “wow” to mean that you really like the painting… I am really thrilled, as food painting has a long history and I am trying to add to that history… this is really what I’m all about as an artist… though I paint in many different styles, I am essentially a food painter… it’s what I love…
Lucindawind
another fantastic piece! excellent
Janis Zroback replied
Thank you so much Lucinda… I am so pleased that you like this painting… this will be my major series this winter and it ties in to the works on canvas called the portfolio collection and also the abundance collection… I am in the main, a food painter, and I am going to be true to that love for the next while… I am really glad of your support…

Susan Duffey
This is a fantastic series,Janis, and this one is just incredible. Will you be putting recipes alongside in your book?
Janis Zroback replied
I plan to do some sort of narrative, but I’m not quite sure what form it will take…when the series has sufficient images to fill a book I will see what it looks like….I am thrilled that it’s getting such a great response…food is really what I like to paint best, so look out for many different collections to add to the various groups of them I have already posted here…thanks you so much Susan…

Gosh Janis, this looks better than the real thing. You really know how to make them look luscious and juicy. That very special way you have of using touches of light and reflection does it, I think.
