Delicious...Blueberry Tart

Delicious...Blueberry Tart

Blueberry Tart” came into being this weekend….I was leafing through old magazines looking for recipes to tear out before discarding, and there and then a new series called “Delicious” was born…it will tie in with my Portfolio and Abundance collections, but this will be all about the food itself without any distractions ...
More than just pictures of food, the series will be saying something about our culture and society, and what we consider to be appealing…what does food mean to us beside just keeping us alive? why do we need it to be embellished and attractive? what does it say about us as a society?....the paintings can stand on their own, but will look great grouped together.

Below you can see a painting by the most famous painter of everyday things Wayne Thiebaud…I have no plans to follow Thiebaud and others like him, my style is different, but I do admire what he set out to do as a comment on our society, and that is what I would like to emulate ...

Watercolour on Sennelier Not Paper…

Both Robert Frost and Pablo Neruda, celebrated the simple things in life in their poetry…here is what Frost says about this incredibly healthful berry.

Blueberries as big as the end of your thumb,
Real sky-blue, and heavy, and ready to drum
In the cavernous pail of the first one to come!
And all ripe together, not some of them green
And some of them ripe! You ought to have seen
... Robert Frost

This series is all about the food itself without any distractions…plus it has always been my mantra to paint the different collections in totally different ways…that way I keep myself challenged and interested…thank you so much Catherine..glad you like it…

Thats what i love about your work is the attention to detail ….......

  • Janis Zroback replied

This painting hearkens back to a series I did some years ago, intending to write a book to go along with the collection…I never did the book and the paintings are all buried in storage now…when I painted this one this weekend, I got the same feeling of peace, of clarity, of calm…I thought oh yes this will be the start of a new series, where the focus will be clearly delineated with no ambivalence…
Food is not easy to paint…you can’t fudge it….it is my favourite subject matter….

Thanks so much Tone…glad you like it.

Funny enough i was going to say you should do a book with them Janis

  • Janis Zroback replied

I was just talking to Michael, who looked at the enlarged version of this one and thinks it is wonderful, (no prejudice there at all)...I told him I planned to do more and he started to ratttle off suggestions for subject matter…so maybe this time I might follow through with a book…we’ll see how it goes…

Let me start by saying it’s absolutely a beautiful painting, but it is different from what I’m normally see you post. I don’t mean that like it’s a bad thing because it is not, just different. I like it very much.

  • Janis Zroback replied

Well Jim…I can understand your surprise, as usually there is a lot going on in my paintings, but if you remember my garlic and onion paintings, they were also mostly a white background….that being said, in general all my collections are different from each other…the only thing they have in common is that one, I painted them and two, there is a message behind all of them…
I don’t post all that I do to RedBubble…you would be surprised to see the styles of some of my other collections…
Like most of my work posted here, this painting is new, but it hearkens back to a collection that I did years ago, that was mean’t to go in a book…I decided against the book at the time, and the whole collection is now in storage…
I decided to start a new series this past weekend along the same lines, and intend to go through with the book but with all new work…the significant white space will figure a lot in it, and so far I have plans for food only, but that may change depending on how I feel…I’m so glad you like the first in the series…I do hope you feel the same about the rest…thank you so much.

  • Joanne Bradley

Mmmmm! This is wonderful Janis, I love your use of white space it just adds to the lusciousness of those berries!

  • Janis Zroback replied

The white space is just as important as the image itself…I’m so glad you picked up in that Joanne…you are very astute…I have said so many times…this piece is very significant….it is really not as simple as it looks…thank you so much…glad you like it…
