Landscape...Mysterious Kor

“Mysterious Kor” came out of nowhere today…I started out planning to do a winter painting, then as this scene emerged, out of the blue the title came into my head…the strange thing is that I had never heard of or read the poem before in my life…when the name popped into my head I looked it up and found it was about a city where no one lived, and is an allegory about London during the blitz…when I read the first two lines, I saw that they echo the subject of the painting...

Not in the waste beyond the swamps and sand,
The fever-haunted forest and lagoon,
Mysterious Kor thy walls forsaken stand,
Thy lonely towers beneath the lonely moon,
Not there doth Ayesha linger, rune by rune
Spelling strange scriptures of a people banned.
The world is disenchanted; over soon
Shall Europe send her spies through all the land.
Nay, not in Kor, but in whatever spot,
In town or field, or by the insatiate sea,
Men brood on buried loves, and unforgot,
Or break themselves on some divine decree,
Or would o’erleap the limits of their lot,
There, in the tombs and deathless, dwelleth SHE! Andrew Lang

Wow are you up very early or very late?..it’s past midnight here….this painting kind of haunts me as it seemed to appear out of nowhere…I looked at it and said “Mysterious Kor”...then said to myself “What on earth is Mysterious Kor?”...then googled it and there it was…it’s supposed to be about my favourite city outside of Canada….London….and it’s about war….all very eerie…thanks so much Tone…glad you like it…
Karin Taylor
beautiful work Janis :)

Thank you so much Karin…

I just looked at the clock on my desk top which tells me time all over the world….you can say you’re an early riser…I should be in bed myself…
When it comes to painting I always go with the vibe….never fight it…but this strange title coming from nowhere was a first…
Janis Zroback replied
Going up right now….g’night….

Brilliant and compelling, but too eerily familiar – my first impression was the bush (or forest) fires we have here every summer. In fact this month is the 70th anniversary of “Black Friday”, the 13th January 1939, during which a firestorm spread across Victoria and killed 71 people; there have been many others since. Like London during the blitz, much of rural Victoria was deserted. Sorry to be so negative, but this is a powerfully evocative image for me.
Janis Zroback replied
I am so pleased this resonated with you…I am doing more research on the poem and the poet…I want to try and figure out why it came into my head even though it is not the title of the poem….the poem is titled “She for HRH” and is tied into Rider Haggard’s book “She”, which coincidently is the name of one of my paintings from a few years back…I must post that painting…
Now another mystery…not two minutes after I posted the painting, I googled the name again, and lo and behold two lines down is “Landscape…Mysterious Kor” Fine Art Print by Janis Zroback….below that is my narrative that I wrote above…I know google is fast but it usually takes a few days for something to show up…. thanks so much Bev…I really appreciate your telling me what this image means to you…

Ohh Janis this is spooky! My mum was in London during the Blitz (and is still terrified of the nosie of thunder at 82 years of age) and my cousin lost her house in the Ash Wednesday bushfires in Victoria…both of which can be seen and felt in your painting. But there’s more to this painting than those things, there’s an intangible eerieness that transcends a particular event…and your “fey knowing” of it before you painting it demonstrates that….how wonderful! It gives me goosebumps to look at it. A favourite.
Janis Zroback replied
You’re telling me…I just now found a story by Elizabeth Bowen by the same name….
“Mysterious Kôr” the story, is set in London during World War II on a night when, despite the bright moonlight, the sky is clear of bombers. Into the strange silence come a girl named Pepita and a soldier named Arthur, wandering through the night together, because in the crowded city there is no place where they can be alone. Pepita quotes from a poem about Kôr, an abandoned city, which she imagines London to be; it is a city from which all the people have long ago disappeared, a city free of the dominion of time, a city where Pepita and Arthur can be forever alone…
I am continuing the research, because the “She” of the poem is the “She” by Rider Haggard and is also the title of another of my paintings ...what really struck me was the line “The World is disenchanted”...how true is that today?
Lang died in 1912, so he must have been psychic…
Thank you so much Estelle…I really appreciate your telling the story of your reactions to the painting, and I’m so glad you like it.

Stunning painting, Janis, made even more compelling by your story behind it. It is amazing what sometimes emerges through our paintings.
Janis Zroback replied
Somehow I think there is a lot more to the story…I have been experiencing some interesting things since I posted last night…see my replies above…I’m so happy you like it Bev…thanks so much..
Colin Cartwright
Automatic painting – like the automatic writing of psychics. Fascinating, the stuff coming from the subconscious.
I like this tree and golden light – but your words suggest an inferno, which also fits.
Superb, Janis!
Janis Zroback replied
Welcome Colin…I think a lot of my watercolours are like that…they seem to take over…I have to always run with it and wait for the outcome…I’m glad you like it…thanks so much.

Janis Zroback replied
It appears to be more than what I planned it to be…I think it also has to do with another painting that I will post as soon as I do a photo…I think they are tied together, but in what way remains to be seen…

Thanks so much KJ…

Sometimes you just have to go with your instinct and in this case the result is superb! Despite the wonderful illumination it does have that post-apocalyptic feeling…

As bevanimage commented earlier, my first thought was fire. We had raging fires here early this year (Black Saturday) and it seemed all of Victoria was a hell furnace, nearly 200 people perished :( Your work doesn’t capture light, but you seem to create a blinding white light and heat in your work. It’s totally amazing.
Janis Zroback replied
Welcome Heidi…thank you so much for your lovely comment…
