Landscape...The Journey...Who Is Here?

Who Is Here” is part of the semi-abstract Collection now named The Journey...Watercolour on MDF…see the beginning of The Journey below…click on each image to see the enlarged version..

Wind and weather brought us to this place..
The distant sound of voices whisper across the water..
Night and Silence…who is here?
Solitude and Silence are our only companions…
How curious the light that shines on the water!!
Night and Silence..who is here?
Echo answers nothing
. ..J.Zroback

We were not certain, but we were on the way to somewhere..
The mountains in the distance seem to hold everything in shadow..
Where we were, was a field of poppies, but there was snow in the hedgerows..
Beyond were fields and yet more fields, then what appeared to be a ridge of smaller hills hidden by a block of dense trees…
Behind us the lands fell away to nothingness
..J. Zroback

Winter whispered softly as we turned our way homewards…
Why is it so dark you asked, scarcely daring to breathe…
I didn’t answer, but clasped you closer to my heart,
As snowflakes hung suspended in the deep blue night
... J. Zroback

Thou greatest Keeper of Secrets,
Most elusive, consummate Illusionist,
Riddlester non-pareil, Mazemaster,
Supreme Criptician -
From whom do You hide,
everywhere and nowhere?
For whom do You wait?
Who else?
Only the ocean can know the ocean

see George is in the same boat as me….......he needs that thesaurus….......
I have to say that the colors you choose for your journey series is well thought out…..
each one of these journeys really shows representation throuth the colors…..........

  • Janis Zroback replied

The landscape is surreal…a place of imagination…the journey is through the mind, so I’m using any colour that appeals to me…glad you like it…thanks KJ…

I wanted them to be so, though the one I’m working on right now is more down to earth…we do have to come down to earth sometimes… :)) thanks so much for your insight Tone…

fabulous depth of colour. all that deep dark blue water seems somehow to represent something very emotional, something close to your heart. wonderful painting.

  • Janis Zroback replied

Maybe it does…I had not thought of that…it could be related to where I was born too….these paintings seem to spring from my imagination without any planning or sketching beforehand and emerge as I put each stroke down…because it’s MDF, I can’t really make any changes…it’s a bit like the Chinese Brush painting…once you put down a stroke you can’t change it…however with the MDF, if you try to change it, it disappears…each of them are done on top of the one before, so there is no record other than what I post here…I could have done each on a different board, but I wanted it to be like life…when a minute has passed it is gone forever…
It’s funny, but even though it’s watercolour, the ghost of the previous paintings do stay behind…a tribute to the great pigments of W/N, plus I do tend to use the ones that stain…
I’m so pleased you like them Marion…thank you for taking the time to comment…

yes I read you are painting on MDF – now that is a challenge—do you prepare the surface first with a base coat of paint? I actually have some MDF, but no watercolours good enough they are all dried up..will have to buy more and need a bit of money to restock. I assume you dont water these down much? and just blend them together very very clever and a great affect.

  • Janis Zroback replied

I painted it with gesso first of all…three coats….sanding between each…then I did the first painting…every other painting has been done on top of the previous one…they easily wipe off, but you can still see the ghost of the one before….
I use the same amount of water but every stroke is the first and the last, as if you try to paint another layer you will remove what you’ve just done…you have to be absolutely sure before you put each stroke of paint down and I don’t draw before hand…it’s a lot like chinese brush painting in that you have an image in your mind of where you want to go and you just do it…however as with all watercolour there are some nice surprises..
I like the challenge and the end result….because the paint is not absorbed the colours stay really bright….but I don’t recommend it to anyone who find watercolour frustrating….they will find using good paper much easier…I’m glad you like it Linda…thank you so much..

When i read the first line I knew it was someone’s writing I loved and thought this is Eliot, just as I scrolled down to see his name. Love that work and now I love the one you’ve created, too. Great companions these two. Congrats Janis. I know we’ll be seeing it featured very soon.

  • Janis Zroback replied

We are the Hollow Men….though I am writing the story for this journey, I felt the Eliot excerpt most apropos…I am an English major, so I see a quote in everything…everything reminds me of a poem or a book…this quote appeals on so many levels…too long to discuss on this page, but you know what I mean…
I’m so pleased you like the series…I have another to post, and then I have to take a break from it to do some other work, but I will get back to it asap..thanks so much Michael…

another beautiful painting Janis, when do you find time to paint!!!??
do you paint in the mornings or the evenings i wonder :) or do you set aside a special time each day?

  • Janis Zroback replied

I paint in between everything else at no special time…do work on the computer, then paint, cook, then paint, look after my family, paint…that’s the way it goes…it may be anytime of the day or evening….in between I also see friends, go out, and everything else that life involves…thank you so much Karin…I’m happy you like the series…
