Photo...What We Want...

“What We Want” is part of my Garden collection...
Photography….as is…
This is the result of my trying to alter my soil to get blue Hydrangeas...we are never satisfied wih what we have….my alkaline soil will not yield blue flowers even though this was a blue species to begin with…I can get any other colour including red and white, but no blue…so I messed with the soil and got a huge plant producing three different colours of flowers , blue, purple and pink with some individual flowers showing all three colours at the same time..I gave up and learned to love my hybrid…it has a charm of its own ...
What we want
is never simple.
We move among the things
we thought we wanted:
a face, a room, an open book
and these things bear our names—
now they want us.
But what we want appears
in dreams, wearing disguises.
We fall past,
holding out our arms
and in the morning
our arms ache.
We don’t remember the dream,
but the dream remembers us.
It is there all day
as an animal is there
under the table,
as the stars are there
even in full sun. ...Linda Pastan

Janis…I think they are lovely and it is good to know someone who has a green thumb…all I end up with is a broken weed wacker…
Janis Zroback replied
I am an avid gardener Bill, with two city gardens to look after…I collect Hydrangeas, Daylilies, Hostas and Ferns among others, and all summer I’m there digging and planting and moving things around…one of these days I will achieve that blue Hydrangea that I crave…for now I have to be content with the other colours…
Janis Zroback replied
I wanted to give you this link to one of my pages…
Cora Wandel
Janis, beautiful word and image!
Janis Zroback replied
Thank you so much Cora…coming from a photographer, that is praise indeed..

Jim Phillips
Wonderful clarity and gorgeous colour. Good photography.
Janis Zroback replied
Thank you so much Jim…I’m quite proud of my photography, but rarely show it to anyone…don’t quite know why…I might just open another acct. for it…
catherine walker
amazing ..so blue and so clear..you did a great job …
Janis Zroback replied
Thank you so much Catherine…I published about ten paintings today all on one page, and then decided that a photo would be a nice change…
betha
Wonderful shot, such strong colours!
Janis Zroback replied
Thank you so much Betha…the plant responded to all my mollycoddling with compost, and gave me beautiful colour even though it was not exactly what I wanted…the sun was shining right on one of the multicoloured flowers…it seemed too good to pass up….
Linda Callaghan
lovely hydrangea Janis, we have some in our garden….this is such a beautiful colour – great shot
Janis Zroback replied
It’s more like tricolour, because of me messing about with the soil.. :)) thank you so much Linda…
ginnymac
superb plant Janis as well as the photo. I had blue ones [many many years ago ] and the soil was solid ochre clay.too hot at my place here [Queensland]
Janis Zroback replied
I’m dying for blue, but it’s not on the cards…thanks so much Ginny…glad you like it.
Karin Taylor
oooh, what a great story to accompany this lovely image of your hybrid hydrangea…i think that a hybrid is the most beautiful of all encompassing facets of each variety, something to really admire, and also your determination to perservere and succeed, but knowing when to step back and let nature find it’s own way…. hydrangeas have always been for me, one of the sweetest bushes of all, because of their ability to produce these large round bouquets of sweetness…what other plant produces an entire bouquet in one bunch! gorgeous!
Janis Zroback replied
Plus there is something to see all through the winter, sticking up through the snow, even after the blooms have dried, and I also dry some of the blooms in fall and have them in the house for as long as I want…I have about 11 different species and wish I had room for more…glad you like the picture Karin…thanks so much.
GEORGE SANDERSON
Wonderful pics, Janis
my dad used to say ,if you put iron filings in the soil you will get red or pink and use lime and you get blue !
Janis Zroback replied
It’s the iron that I put in the soil, that made mine change colour, but my soil is so alkaline the plant won’t go to the full blue unless I put it in a pot in the ground, and the plants are too large for that….thanks George…glad you like the picture…
Alison Pearce
Beautiful!
Janis Zroback replied

Oh what a wonderful bloom Janis! It looks lilac colored to me, and is just lovely! Great capture!
Janis Zroback replied
It’s part pink, part blue and part purple….the whole plant has developed like that since I added iron to the soil…glad you like it…thanks so much.
