Winter...The Nothing That Is....

Winter...The Nothing That Is....

The Nothing That Is” is part of the Winter collection…this is a complicated thought…Winter is indeed something, as we know here in the North…most people would say that Winter is white, but in the city we have the reflections of all the colour in the buildings and lights that the snow reflects…but most of all the joys of winter, I think, should be portrayed in brilliant colour…the stark white of the birches pop against the blues and purples, and there is a little green and gold to remind us that the earth is still alive underneath.
In the face of all that winter is, Man himself becomes “Nothing” and “Beholds Nothing that is not there, and sees the Nothing that is
”...

One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow
And have been cold a long time,
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter
Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,
Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place.
For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is
..Wallace Stevens

Are you making this Nothing stuff up…..
If there is nothing there never was anything….
therefore since there was Spring, Summer, and Fall we now have winter…..
    The nothing is real….........
your nothing is just a rest to rekindle back into the seasons…....
    a cycle….....
Oh I am losing my mind…..................
    wonderful painting Janis….......

  • Janis Zroback replied

Read it again and it will make sense….the listener sees nothing that is not there and he also sees the nothing that is there…but don’t make yourself crazy…I’m happy you like the painting, and that’s all I really need to know…thanks so much KJ.. :)))

So incredibly beautiful Janis…..Winter never looked so good!!!!!!!!!! Perhaps an incredible illusion, a mirage of what we want Winter to be… Awesome work!!!!

  • Janis Zroback replied

I’m so pleased you like my portrayal of winter Joyce…I don’t participate in winter sports, but I do like the magic that winter can be, despite it’s dangers and frustrations…to me this is what it is…an incredible inspiring time of year…thanks so much.

Gorgeous Janis, really enjoy the colours. You normally don’t think of a lot of colour when you think of winter, but you’ve managed the convey that wintery feel using colour. I’m impressed.

  • Janis Zroback replied

I dowhite paintings of winter too, and I will be posting some of them, but even those have blue in them…I see white with lots of coloured undertones and my winter paintings reflect that, but they are also a reflection of all that winter means, and not just a picture of it…thanks so much Jim…glad you like it…

  • kjgordon

Just beautiful, Janis. Winter is full of colours, especially here in Australia. Thanks for your perspective on a northern winter colour.

  • Janis Zroback replied

We are quite steeped in white here, at first glance, but when you look a second time you see the colour, or at least I see the colour, as I do in everything I see…thank you so much Bev…

Only you could portrait winter with so much vivid color and yet we relate so well to it! The snow indeeds does illuminate so many other colors in nature but you have to look beyond it! And you certainly do!

  • Janis Zroback replied

Thank you so much Joanne..there are some paler ones coming up, but mostly my winters are filled with colour.

Once again, your work and special style is great Janis. Am I correct in believing that you received SIX features this month though? Isn’t this rather unusual?

I don’t think it is unusual…many people get multiple features….I have eleven so far for March from various groups…I post a huge number of paintings which are also featured on the popular art pages…it’s the reward for hard work…. :))
