Fruits of the Earth...Apple Harvest...

Apple Harvest” is part of the Fruits of the Earth Collection...

Watercolour and Gouache on French Textured paper…

Behold the apples’ rounded worlds:
juice-green of July rain,
the black polestar of flowers, the rind
mapped with its crimson stain.
The russet, crab and cottage red
burn to the sun’s hot brass,
then drop like sweat from every branch
and bubble in the grass.
They lie as wanton as they fall,
and where they fall and break,
the stallion clamps his crunching jaws,
the starling stabs his beak
In each plump gourd the cidery bite
of boys’ teeth tears the skin;
the waltzing wasp consumes his share,
the bent worm enters in.
I, with as easy hunger, take
entire my season’s dole;
welcome the ripe, the sweet, the sour,
the hollow and the whole
. Laurie Lee

    For I have had too much of apple-picking.
    I am overtired of the great harvest I myself desired

    The use of blue in this red/green scheme is brave (to me ) but effective. Great composition.

  • Janis Zroback replied

    Thank you so much Susan…I use colour according to how I feel at the time of painting and often it bears no relationship to reality…glad you like the piece..

    I used to have an art instructor that once said, “Anyone that uses any kind of black with watercolours, doesn’t really know how to paint.” I still keep some payne’s gray in the box, but really try not to use it so often. Probably more for backgrounds than using it to shade with, and that what my old instructor was really addressing. All this ramling is coming around to the simple statement. Like the blue.

  • Janis Zroback replied

    I really think that if I had gone to art school, I would not be painting now…I tried it once and she said my pictures were too pretty…I never went back…that being said, I also never use black from the tube, [it’s too dead]...I get my darkest colours with mixtures of blues, browns, reds, and greens…glad you like it Jim.

    Crisp and juicy is how this makes me feel Janis! I do love apples, to look at and to eat, although I have been known to eat pears lately hehehehe! I like the dashes of blue as well. They somehow seem to give the painting a 3D effect.

  • Janis Zroback replied

    Thank you so much Joanne…this was initially done for drawing day and removed afterwards, so there’s more of drawing than painting in it.

    I mean’t that with every comment I see a different picture of you…I always have to look twice to make sure it’s you…but it is our right to change as often as we want to, from hairstyles to shoes, to our minds and everything in between, and men will just have to deal with it.. :)))
