Portfolio...Mutsu

“Mutsu” is part of the Gallery Collection...original is for sale…
Acrylic on Canvas…
“A marvellous sophisticated apple” states the website…..it’s named after the Mutsu province of Japan, where it was supposedly first grown.....
I looked at it, and it seemed so proud to be itself, I had to write a special poem for it….
One Apple was left behind that day.
After the ladders were taken away….
Only the dents in the grass remain,
to show that anyone was there…..
Only the baskets piled high, in the shadows….
Only the discarded lay on the ground….
Then the sound of footsteps, broke the quiet of the orchard….
The sound of a truck roared away in the distance.
Silence returned, and darkness descended….
But the rising moon, caught an echo of it’s light..
A cool red gleam shone out in the night......

kamel
looks like a pop art a little
Janis Zroback replied
Hm….do you think so? Pop art gets its inspiration from commercial art and items of mass culture, such as comic strips, popular foods and brand names….this series came entirely out of my head, and the backgrounds are meant to be stylized fantasy landscapes…..but then art is very subjective when it comes to creation and indeed, interpretation….
kamel
I don’t about that fact but the impression that it give
was quite different from the others
I don’t mean in all the term of the world”pop-art”
It make me think of that what can I do
Janis Zroback replied
I see now…

Linda Callaghan
wonderful series Janis – unique, colourful, and I do love the way you have painted the backgrounds with an abstract look which does not detract from the fruit but makes it very interesting to the eye. Great shapes and colours.
Janis Zroback replied
They represent a whimsical fantasy landscape…in the Mutsu, there is water in the dark blue at the base and running down from the top left…actually in most of them the dark areas that run through represent water…in the Group of Five, the whole area is the sea…every line is significant and was planned with a definite meaning…no two are the same….thanks Linda…glad you like it…
Ron Fitzgerald

Janis..your fruit is so delicious.. the colours are fantastic..that looks like a beautiful shiny apple all ready to snatch of the plate..and eat!! well done
Janis Zroback replied
I wanted the fruit to look alive, but the landscape to look like a fantasy…each painting took a lot of planning as all I had in front of me was the fruit…glad you like it Catherine…
Linda Callaghan
thanks for that info. Janis amazing, now I am going to go study them again – so interesting :-)
Janis Zroback replied
Here is a picture of another from the series in progress…it’s called “The Little Green One”...as you can see I paint the background first, and when it is in the last stages I paint the fruit…you can see the apple on the table behind the easel…

I love your enthusiasm Karin….it’s so contagious….this picture shows the start of the fruit in another of the series, called The Little Green One…he landscape still has some more work…maybe another day or two…the apple will also take another day or two….
Linda Callaghan
Thank you so much Janis for showing your work in progress it is great to see where you are working and how you work. It looks very organised and gives me some insight which is a help. I am working from one mug of brushes at the moment but hopefully as time goes by my collection will increase. Have my easel but want to get a stand up one next. I expect when the apple has finished its work it is devoured :-) thanks again
Linda Callaghan
do you mind me asking how many layers your apple took to get the beautiful colours and shiny glaze ? :-)
Janis Zroback replied
Interminable it seems…but at least ten, and maybe more…they are all very thin layers…takes a few days….
Janis Zroback replied
P.S. I use no mediums here and the work is not varnished…it’s just paint…
Joanne Bradley
Love the brightness and shine on the fruit in this series Janis. And yes I like seeing your process as well. I never would have thought you started with the background. And is that a green apple that is going in the middle? Mmmmm!
Janis Zroback replied
It’s a Golden Delicious, but it was greener than usual…I always paint the main subject last or almost last, then I go back and finish off the rest…I usually paint from back to front…glad you like it Joanne…
Racheli
I love that shiny vibrant composition, exquisite Janis.
