Tomatoes...

“Tomatoes” is part of the Food Collection, and the Gallery Collection

My neighbour Beatrice grows Tomatoes right here in the city amidst the Dahlias and Hydrangeas in her front garden…somehow they fit the unplanned scheme of the garden, and I love it when she donates some fresh ones for my lunch…the joy of the everyday things in life…

Acrylic on Canvas…

The street
filled with tomatoes,
midday,
summer,
light is
halved
like
a
tomato,
its juice
runs
through the streets
.

It enters at lunchtime,
takes
its ease
on countertops,
among glasses,
butter dishes,
blue saltcellars.
It sheds
its own light,
benign majesty
..excerpt Pablo Neruda…Ode to a Tomato

Lovely painting, especially the reflective qualities of the tomatoes. As for me, slice it and put it between two pieces of bread with some mayo. Love it in the summer. Then if I want to get fancy I’ll fix a BLT.

  • Janis Zroback replied

It’s great any ay you make it, especially in a bacon sandwich…glad you like the painting…I often do tomatoes and actually most anything that finds it’s way into my kitchen…you’ll see when I post the one I’m doing right now.

how long does it take you to paint something like this?

  • Janis Zroback replied

It is a small one, only 8×8 inches….so a week, from concept to drawing and then painting…but I work on several at a time…while layers dry, I can work on other paintings.

Those tomatoes just pop against that superb green! I must try your recipe but I have to say that Kkjgordon’s recipe brings back memories of sitting on the porch steps as a child….

  • Janis Zroback replied

These tomatoes are really popular ones, as the prints have started to sell…my neighbour keeps me well supplied, but I still buy as we love them so much…thanks Joanne.
