Solitude

“Solitude” is part of the Chinese Brush Painting Series..
Watercolour and Inks on Rice Paper…
I originally painted this on white paper, but I thought it was too bland so I masked the image and painted the paper in an ombre effect with watercolour…it wrinkles a lot as it dries, and I like the effect, so I have not mounted the painting, but left it as you see it.
How happy he, who free from care
The rage of courts, and noise of towns;
Contented breathes his native air,
In his own grounds.
Whose herds with milk, whose fields with bread,
Whose flocks supply him with attire,
Whose trees in summer yield him shade,
In winter fire.
Blest! who can unconcern’dly find
Hours, days, and years slide swift away,
In health of body, peace of mind,
Quiet by day,
Sound sleep by night; study and ease
Together mix’d; sweet recreation,
And innocence, which most does please,
With meditation.
Thus let me live, unheard, unknown;
Thus unlamented let me die;
Steal from the world, and not a stone
Tell where I lie. Alexander Pope

I like it some thing different. Try spraying the back of a test paper with a quick drying spray they use on photos to set the color from fading, it might work or clear lacker. Tom
Janis Zroback replied
Thanks Tom…I will try that next time…it sounds like it might work….when mounted it will smooth out, as then it will be glued to a stiffer paper, but for now I kind of like the wrinkled effect with the bird…
Belinda "Billy...
I love paintings of litte birds, just love them. Is there a bird group? oh yea The birds, this is so cute. Billy
Janis Zroback replied

Simple but effective. Love how the red and green softly blends into each other, and those wrinkled parts let them reflect each others colors.
Janis Zroback replied
I loved the happy accident of the wrinkles and I’m going to try and duplicate it on another painting, but you know how these things can be…it probably won’t happen the way I want it to be….thanks Mui-Ling

I have some lovely Japanese rice paper that I haven’t been game to use…I must try your Chinese brush painting lessons. This is so lovely…the texture adds to the 3D effect and the little bird just pops out of his scenery.
Janis Zroback replied
Thank you Estelle..go for it, it’s the only way to know for sure…

This is great Janis, lots of character in the little guy!
yes rice paper can be tricky to mount but worth the effort. The effect here looks good with the wrinkle.
Janis Zroback replied
I don’t mount them myself…as you’ve said, it’s very tricky, so I take them to a Chinese art shop, who do a beautiful job…this one will stay unmounted, as I want to keep the wrinkles…

Very creative ,and very effective ,if only I knew the the process you describe ,but i do know I LIKE IT !!!
Janis Zroback replied
If you want to add a background to a finished watercolour you have to do one of several techniques…some of these can be using a masking fluid, painting carefully around the image, or using a stencil you cut out of frisket…the last one is what I did..it is painstaking, but it works…
