Night time in the Sunflower Garden

Night Time in the SunFlower Garden” is part of the Series “Night

In many pictures of SunFlowers designed to teach the budding artist how to paint, these tall denizens of the fields are always showing their faces to the sun….I kept a few sketches based on these sunny images in my files..going through them recently, I thought “What happens at night in the Sunflower Garden’? This painting is the result.

Watercolour on Arches Paper…

And all day long that silent worship lasts,
And as their god moves grandly down the west,
And every stem a lengthening shadow casts
Toward the east, ah, they love him best,
And watch till every lingering ray is gone,
Then slowly turn to greet another dawn

thats a great way of altering the normal take Janis terrific contrast between the light and the dark
    looks a bit Abstract also

  • Janis Zroback replied

I did not want to paint the usual image…I have done sunflowers in other ways, shown previously on RB…this time I chose my darkest blues and green paints and layered them several time using all kinds of tools including sponges…everything done on wet paper as usual..I think it also ended up looking kinda spooky…

    Stunning work!

  • Janis Zroback replied

Thank you Alison…I can’t wait for the Galleries here, so I can organize all my paintings in groups…I’m beginning to feel a bit frazzled as they are all over the place, and I can’t move them around, the way I want to…at home here, they are all neatly arranged in collections.

A flower glowing in the night is a beautiful imagery. I remember reading a poem by one of the bubblers about sunflowers, and they said at night they become moon flowers. The colors here are so beautiful and alive; like watching fireflies at night.

  • Janis Zroback replied

Thanks Mui-Ling…did you check how your card looked in the buyers booth?

So imaginative! I like the dark intense feel of this one Janis! Excellent point of view. The orange just pops from the navy shadows!

  • Janis Zroback replied

In real life they would all be dark, but a painter has the privilege of interpreting the subject in a way that best tells the story…I love being a painter for that very same reason…to say it the way I want to say it, and still have it resonate with the viewers…
