The Inn of Happiness
Chinese Brush Painting-The Inn of Happiness..
Ink and Watercolour on Rice Paper.
“The Inn of Happiness” [my title] is the very first Chinese style painting I ever did, and for practice I based it on a very ancient Chinese landscape painting…
I decided I loved this style of painting and went on to compose my own imaginary scenes with a distinctive oriental flavour.
After doing just a few pieces, I had to give it up in order to concentrate on my main body of work.
This year when I found that RedBubble was the perfect arena for me to indulge in any style of painting my heart desired, I happily returned to it….
I am including “The Inn of Happiness” here as an example of adding colour to an ink painting, in illustration of the articles I have written on the subject so far…Janis
Why question the fate of the dew?
The morning sun burns dew, and drowns in clouds.
The holy mountain is not a palace
But an inn.
Once you, innkeeper,
Drive out desire, ignorance, hate,
What remains? Enlightenment? Affliction?
Dew is your model: nothing at all. Han Shan

Lovely compliment on my work Alison…thank you…..I hope to see the results of your experiment with this genre very soon…I’m sure they will be great….
I think words add so much dimension to a painting….it helps to lead the viewer into a dialogue with the work….

Mui-LIng thank you so much for all your wonderful compliments and for choosing some of my paintings to add to your list of favourites…
As you can see from these pages, I like to paint in all styles, but there is something about Chinese Brush Painting that speaks to me, and has always done, ever since the day I painted The Inn of Happiness….

This is truly a fantastic watercolour. I have two sets of chinese brushes and haven’t had time to do much although some years ago my emphasis was on pen and ink. This is really lovely Janis and some of us are really ecletic genre wise in arty talk!
Janis Zroback in reply to GloriaDK’s comment, 2 months ago
Thank you Gloria….you must put those brushes to good use very soon and let us see the results…
