The Potting Shed

The Potting Shed” is the first of a Series by the same name...

Gouache and Watercolour on Grey St Armand Linen Paper with Collaged Mesh Cloth…

We’re planting this coming long weekend, so the pots will be taken out of their winter nest of burlap, and brought into the warmth of the spring sunshine....

May and June. Soft syllables, gentle names for the two best months
in the garden year: cool, misty mornings gently burned away with a
warming spring sun, followed by breezy afternoons and chilly nights.
The discussion of philosophy is over; it’s time for work to begin
.....Peter Loewer

    Steph Granshaw

mmm im getting memories of garden smells back in the UK

  • Janis Zroback replied

Yes…I know what you mean….it’s the smell of dampness, green, earth, wet leaves, and the burlap sacking used to wrap the tender plants….I collaged rough netting around the base of the pots, and that helps to convey atmosphere.

    Beautiful work- Love the tones

  • Larry Butterworth

    Larry Butterworth

Very nice painting. It just grabbed me as I was surfing along and wouldn’t let me pass. there is so much feeling or energy or whatever it is that makes something reach out at you. I do watercolors and do love the medium. Best Regards.

  • Janis Zroback replied

Thanks Larry, for taking the time to let me know how much you liked my work….
I like your use of the word “energy”...for me the time it took to do this painting was well worth all the energy involved….it’s the light I think, that exudes the power that drew you in….

  • peggywright

    peggywright

Beautiful love the color and lighting and subject! I can remember going in my grandfathers shed and smelling the dirt!

  • Janis Zroback replied

Thank you Peggy, for your wonderful comment…

  • Mui-Ling Teh

    Mui-Ling Teh

Drawing something from memory ceratainly brings out a different result than simply drawing what you see, and I like the lighting and the treatment of the background in this painting which gives that extra quality.

  • Janis Zroback replied

    Thank you Mui-Ling..
I totally agree with you….the ad from years ago just showed a pile of pots for sale….. when I went into my garage and saw my pots waiting for spring with the window above them, I suddenly remembered it, and went back to the studio and conjured up an image out of my head…

99% of my paintings are imaginary…as is customary in the Chinese tradition, I like to paint based on feelings and impressions as much as I can…I try not to be too literal….

Thank you so much Pam…it is one of a selection paintings, not mean’t for RB initially, but I eventually placed it there after I decided to keep the original…most of the paintings I post here are specifically painted for the print market and to appeal to a large variety of tastes and preferences…but here and there are collections I painted to be sold as originals and decided they will do well as prints too…
