The Trees..."The Tulgey Wood"
“_The Tulgey Wood” is part of the Series The Trees and is inspired by the poem Jabberwocky from Alice in Wonderland…
Many of you, will recognize the title from Jabberwocky, a mysterious wood that is in the book..I gave it that name as it was the first thing that popped into my head, when I started to paint
Watercolour and Gouache, on Arches paper…..
The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.
Is it that they are born again
And we grow old? No, they die too,
Their yearly trick of looking new
Is written down in rings of grain.
Yet still the unresting castles thresh
In fullgrown thickness every May.
Last year is dead, they seem to say,
Begin afresh, afresh, afresh*..... Philip Larkin

Being thus prepared for us in all ways, and made beautiful, and good for food, and for building, and for instruments of our hands, this race of plants, deserving boundless affection and admiration from us, becomes, in proportion to their obtaining it, a nearly perfect test of our being in right temper of mind and way of life; so that no one can be far wrong in either who loves trees enough, and everyone is assuredly wrong in both who does not love them, if his life has brought them in his way. - John Ruskin, 1819-1900, Modern Painters VI
