Autumn Water

Autumn Water

Part of the Series of Oriental Brush Paintings...

Ink and Watercolour on Rice Paper.

The northern mountain is blanked in cloud;
for one who hides away, it’s pleasing — perfect
.

So that we could visit each other, I’ve tried to climb high;
my heart follows along, like a wild goose, to exhaustion
.

It’s the hour to see village people returning;
they walk on the sand, rest at the ferry landing
.

At the edge of the sky, the trees look like grass;
Near the river bank is an islet shaped like the moon
.

How welcome if you met me with some wine!
We’d share, intoxicated together through the autumn festival
.

Meng Haoran

The years that pass
Have brought with them
White hair.
Autumn has come
And the trees stand
Bare and cold
.

Perplexed,
I ask the yellow leavers:
“Are you too, sad?
What griefs have you
That you
Are sere and old
?

    For those who are following the my Journal entries on Chinese Brush Painting…here you can see the folds and crease of the thin paper very distinctly…

    I was able to acquire from the studio of a Chinese painter who had passed away, his paper and some other items…the paper was very old and very beautiful in texture. I felt very lucky, and though this is one of the very first paintings I did, I felt quite happy that I had done justice to the paper…he might not agree though, and may be laughing at me right now.

    On the lower right you can see my name stamp in Chinese, but the other stamp I had made for me is partly hidden…it says “patience”

    This also a good example of what I meant when I said what you leave out is just as important as what you leave in….rocks are important to me as they symbolize solidity, and commitment…..I have made them more intense near the water, which because it moves and changes, is more fickle….. the trees are reaching out over the water in a yearning stance, which is just shown by a few strokes of the brush, but you still have the sense that it goes very deep. The mountains are just hinted at, but you can still feel their power, and know that it’s autumn in the hills as well.

    “Autumn Folage, Lazy River,

    Not from a song this time, how I felt a moment ago when I first saw your art.

  • Janis Zroback replied

    Thanks so much Ron…another river quote to add to my
    collection…..the lines are perfect Chinese verse, and very appropriate to the painting.

    This is very beautiful; and though orange it typically warm and vibrant, this image has a more cool and peaceful mood to it. Each element in the painting is very striking; while the style is consistent they each portray their own qualities distinctively.

    I do not post any of mine, as mostly I do miniatures, hard to scan or photograph to bring to a size for publishing without disfigurement. Your work is outrageously gorgeous, I am so impressed. Perhaps in the future I will do some larger sized oriental brush stroke works and then post them. My favorite painting media…it is just so “inner” to be working on.

  • Janis Zroback replied

    I look forward to seeing them…in the meantime I love your photos of vintage subject matter…
