Love and the Red Ribbon

Do you see
how
beautiful
he is
that bird
in the cage
With vibrant colors
and soft brushed
feathers
with a song like
the rising of the sun
bringing light
into the world.

And there he stays
in his cage
all day
singing and pruning
making himself
more beautiful to you.

Oh how you loved him!
You would take
the red
ribbon from
your hair
and show it
to him
telling
him that
he was more
beautiful
than all the red
ribbons in the world.

You would
love to come
home
and see him there …
in his cage
waiting for you.

He is yours
and yours alone.
He is content
to belong to
only you
and stay
in his tiny world
inside his cage.

One day
you looked
at him
with all his
beauty
singing his glad
song
and it made you
weep.
You did not
want to leave him
alone,
all alone
inside his cage.

It was in an insane
moment
that it
happened.
You took the cage
and placed it
outside.
You left the
cage door open
just ajar.

He looked at you
and stopped
singing.

His colors
started to
fade
in the bright
sun.

A pile of feathers
lay on
the cage
floor.

Years later
you heard
a story
about a bird
whose dull gray
feathers
were ruffled.

They said
Kings and Queens
and
Lords and Ladies
and all manner
of people
came from
far and near
just for a song …
it was so sweet.

But when the day
was over
he would go
silent
and sit
not on a tree
branch
but among
the thorns.

Everyone said
it was there
in his
thorny cage
that
his color changed
and became
vibrant
and his
breast feathers
would shine
like gold!

And there
at the bottom
of his
thorny nest
lie a red
ribbon.

A thing of beauty should be shared for all to see not locked away in a cage. Though you may lose it for a time, is not more precious when it is allowed to be free?
