Come With Me
The place was Valley Forge. There is a series of arched windows that are attached to the Chapel there. Each arched window has a story … many stories ….
It was by accident that they met. It only for a brief moment as she gathered berries in the woods. He was rushing by on horseback when their eyes met. She never forgot that moment. So brief was the encounter that she thought that perhaps she had only dreamed of him. She smiled to herself as she continued to think of him. Why was this chance encounter so memorable to her?
Her father came into the kitchen where she was preparing the night’s supper. He told her that there would be two more at their table that night. A colonial he had met on the way to get supplies had crossed his path and had stopped to help him when his horse had suddenly gone lame. “We should be expecting Colonel Wayne and his son in a few hours.”
She hurriedly added more meat to the stew she was cooking and checked to see if there was enough bread for the four of them. When all was ready, Colonel Wayne arrived as expected. She went to the door to welcome them with her father and her heart stopped. It was HIM! The young man she had met in the woods!
While they ate, the Colonel talked about the situation in Philadelphia. British troops were there, drinking and laughing. They were convinced that the Colonial army was no match for them. As the men spoke of fighting and strategy and General Washington’s plans, the young man stared at her and spoke to her slowly in near whispers.
He wanted her to meet him at the Chapel the next day. He would speak to her privately there.
When she met him, he told her of a dream he had that night after meeting her in the woods. The woman in his dream would become the love of his life and though he knew it sounded fantastic, he knew that the woman was her.
“Come with me, ” he told her, “and we shall make a life together.”
What would you do if you were one of these young lovers?
