This is a true story, the next bolt of lightning after this one struck a tree only 30 feet from me – the grass around the base of the tree actually caught fire ! However there is more – just prior to this it had started to rain lightly, I actually looked at the tree and despite being an experienced storm chaser started to weigh up my options for shelter under it – it was a small tree and there was a very steep embankment behinf me which was higher than the tree. I decided not to take that perhaps fatal chance !
