Uluru and a Kangaroo
Uluru is an amazing place, filled with rich vibrant colour and steeped in tradition and story time.
I took this photo on my last trip to Uluru. The sunrise had just finished and the tourist buses were beginning to leave. This gave me a great opportunity to capture the rich colour at this time of day but without the crowds.
To add another element to the composition I decided to include the Kangaroo Road Sign.

I love the kangaroo signs I live in the bush and see them every where they should be made the official icon of Australia. (thats the signs not the roo). Some times they give warnings of distance such as “for the next 10klms”” I always feel like getting out my texta and crossing out the stated distance and replacing it with “the next 6 000 Klms” well captured.

nice shot but a sacret site is in picture.
I photographed this rock so many times for magazines.
Had to remove heaps out of my collection that were not approved, because of sacret sites.
Just telling you, not for me, but behind the street sign, the gap in the rock is a sacret site and if you sell this the parks media manager might get very upset as he constantly browses sites like this (image banks)
further , nice image
ozczecho replied
Hi Joyce – Yes there are heaps of sacred sites around Uluru. We respected all of them. Our guide pointed out which sites were sacred and why. We refused to climb Uluru and as tourists followed any local customs.
Thanks for having a look around :-)
Joyce van Dijk
oh and the right top (rocks fallen out) also sactret site
you are not alowed to photograph tehse sites (notrh east side of the rock) and place them online to sell.
Joyce van Dijk
just be careful with these icons seriously!
Steven Pearce
Joyce is correct… All photographs taken within the Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park require cultural clearance by the Rangers Media Office if you want to commercially sell them. It’s not about making money from you… BECAUSE ITS FREE TO GET THE CLEARANCE its about respecting the culture.
I can see at least 3 sacred sites in this photo…. I’ll take a shot of Uluru any day anywhere but you really do have to think twice before you try and make money out of them.

All you need to know is on this page.
ozczecho, we aren’t picking you out of the crowd… this just happens to be where the conversation started no personal criticisms intended at all.

Ps. As a tour guide myself and having heard what most say about Uluru I wouldn’t take as being the be all and end all. Some of the most sacred sites (including one in this photo) are not marked at all and are not written down in any book or guide. I’ve had dozens of photos rejected by the process even though even to me they had no sacred sites in them.

Hi Steve,
Maybe this isn’t the best place to have the conversation…maybe in a forum @ Northern Territory group might be more appropriate and have more audience.
Thanks for the link, I am having a read now.
Cheers
