I colour in George van Raemdonck's illustrations, because......

My current paintings.

George van Raemdonck illustrated the 1940 edition of the book, ‘Alleen Op De Wereld’. My paintings are intended to record how much pleasure I had in growing up with this book, providing a foretaste of being in foreign countries. I associate them with memories of being read to in the attic, where my bedroom was and with searching for the original (Sans Famille) books, beside the River Seine, with my daughter, in 2005.

In 1920, Van Raemdonck made the switch from De Amsterdammer to De Notenkraker and until 1936 he kept drawing political gags and covers for this magazine. .......”
