Hi, my name is Roman. I live in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. I’m a Polish Canadian or… a Canadian Pole ??..or whatever the popular label is these days ?
My first encounter with photography was a total accident. As a teenager, living on a farm, back in the old country, I was snooping around in our attic one day and stumbled upon a strange equipment (only later I learned the names…). It was a black enlarger, several developing cuvettes, a strange red light, and two cameras with leather bellows. And since I liked playing with all sorts of cool gadgets, that’s exactly what I did.
It turned out my dad was into photography in the early fifties and that was his, forgotten for many years, equipment. So I picked it up and started learning on my own, from taking pictures to developing black and white photos in a makeshift darkroom.. it was fun and I remember those days fondly.
I wish that I could say now .. and the rest was history.. but no, life just got busy… and photography was only a nice memory. Many years later I immigrated to Canada, started new life and there was even less free time for it.
I’ve owned a couple of film cameras during those years and took pictures only occasionally. But finally, last year, I bought my first “grown-up” SLR, a Canon EOS 40D, and I was hooked…. again ??
