An unexpected spell of warmth in mid-January breaks up the frozen surface of Parker River Salt Pannes. As the sun sets, open water attracts hardy waterfowl and the day’s warmth collides with the fast approaching cold of night to pour gold over a winter marshland.

During an unexpected chance to experience Africa, a seed was planted. Nurtured by subsequent forays into wild places, this photographer was born.

Jacques Cousteau said “People protect what they love.” And we’ve all heard that “A picture is worth a thousand words.” So, enough with this. My photography says the rest. Thanks for listening.

  • This day was a nice treat… temps around 50 in January… and the sunset was the perfect way to top it off. Thank you Kent!

Funny to think of sunSET along the Atlantic, but this works!! My sister-in-law lives in Amesbury & belongs to the art association in Newburyport, so she often goes to Plum Island. It’s a favorite place of ours as well, but I haven’t been there in a while. Gorgeous image, Sylvia.

  • Thanks Sheila! I don’t get to Plum Island much and this was my first visit in winter. Ah, snow on the beach… as funny as the sun setting along the Atlantic. ;-) I may have to change old ways and visit more often going forward.

  • Thank you Luda! Took this last month on an unexpectedly warm January day. Not that far from where we were last summer in Newburyport.
