After pecking through newly fallen snow looking for seeds, a female Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) stops in bright sun and turns to the camera as if to ask… “How’s my lipstick?”

During an unexpected chance to experience Africa, a seed was planted. Nurtured by subsequent forays into wild places, this photographer was born.

Jacques Cousteau said “People protect what they love.” And we’ve all heard that “A picture is worth a thousand words.” So, enough with this. My photography says the rest. Thanks for listening.

Wonderful. I love cardinals. Also am enjoying the title.

  • Thank you Randy! Always love seeing these birds but for some reason never photographed them before. But when I saw this girl’s bright red “lips,” I knew that would change. ;-) Wonderful to hear you like and fave the results… Sylvia

  • Many Thanks Laura! I’d been distracted by the showier male cardinal before but now that I see this girl close-up, I believe in girl-power even more! ;-)

    Gorgeous image and bird Sylvia!!!

  • Thank you Kent! Though she doesn’t exhibit the impressive nature of a raptor, she’s not bad for “a city girl,” huh? ;-)

Excellent colours and good sharpnes. A very attractive picture

  • Thank you John! Really appreciate your comment about sharpness. Recently got a new point-and-shoot so I can always keep a camera with me. Has a 50x that had me wondering just how much quality I’d have to give up. But I’ve been quite surprised and pleased. This was handheld at full zoom… equivalent to 1200mm. Now I’d never be able to afford a zoom like that for my DSLR so I’m thrilled with my new addition to the Canon family. ;-)
