Marlborough Street lit by Gaslight and planets by

Just after dusk February 20 2012, along a brick sidewalk in Boston’s historic Back Bay. The golden light from gas-lit lampposts comes care of the City of Boston. The sparkle of starlight is care of “Venus and Jupiter – the sky’s two most brilliant planets – are the first “stars” to pop out at evening dusk, with Venus being the lower planet and Jupiter the higher. " As EarthSky goes on to say, February and March 2012 promise some of the best planet watching in our night skies.

During an unexpected chance to experience Africa, a seed was planted. Nurtured by subsequent forays into wild places, this photographer was born.

Jacques Cousteau said “People protect what they love.” And we’ve all heard that “A picture is worth a thousand words.” So, enough with this. My photography says the rest. Thanks for listening.

    fascinating, lovely shot xx

  • Thank you Lynn! Not the most exotic or adventurous location but I enjoy finding Nature’s handiwork wherever I can. And when it’s on my own street and gets me to learn about astronomy, even better! ;-)

Beautiful, moody image Sylvia! I’m not sure of exactly what treatment you’ve given this but the colour, tones and textures are really wonderful. And great commentary to go along with it!

  • This is my favorite street in Boston. A quiet little oasis of old brick and brownstone. And unlike most city streets, it is lit by gaslight. The subtlety and warmth of that light creates that mood and texture. I just shot with cloudy white balance to embrace its warm tones. My biggest challenge was that I didn’t have my tripod so needed brightness and contrast to boost details in ground shadows and had to blur some noise that showed up in the sky. Luckily on that last one, clouds don’t mind a little soft focus. Thank you for your wonderful words. So pleased you like my street. ;-)
