Walking home one day (September 2011), I saw a white bird hop behind the bushes as I turned up the entrance way. Wait a minute… a white bird?!? I quickly ran upstairs and grabbed my camera. (Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens) This bird was very nervous, keeping himself hidden in bushes as much as possible. I was lucky to get a shot off before he flew off.
The coloring of his feathers immediately reminded me of a magical bear… Spirit Bear, a white Black Bear who lives in Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest. After sending this picture to a birder friend and the Massachusetts Audobon Society, my thoughts were confirmed.
This “Spirit Bird” is actually a leucistic American Robin. Just like the Spirit Bear, he has a pigment disorder that gives him this pale, white coloring.
