Adult male polar bear, Ursus maritimus, at Cape Churchill, Wapusk National Park, Canada shows he still has a childlike, mischievous side as he gives us his best innocent smile. As if he wants to assure us… “Would this face lie to you?!”
It’s November and he’s still landlocked waiting for cold to create the life-giving platforms of ice he needs to return to sea and hunt once again. In the meantime, he nibbles on a small twig (by his left front paw) which may supply passing entertainment but won’t head of starvation if sea ice doesn’t come soon. Honest… cold and ice is that important to polar bears. Would I lie to you?
