Artist's Description

He walks out of ancient First Nations legend to splash in the protected waters of Gribbell Island on the coast of British Columbia, western Canada… He is a special black bear known by many names… Ursus americanus kermodei is his scientific name. Or more commonly Kermode bear. The Tsimshion Nation of the Pacific Northwest call him Mooksgm’ol, the Spirit of the rainforest. Legend says Raven the Creator came among the black bears and turned every tenth one white to remind us of when the world was peaceful, covered with ice and snow.

That is mythology. Yet this bear does indeed live in the thick trees and clear streams of the Great Bear Rainforest. So we must remember and honor his legend. The legend of pristine Nature, peace and harmony that is Spirit Bear.

August 2011 footnote
This magical creature is featured on the cover of the August 2011 issue of National Geographic Magazine, The Wildest Place in North America – Land of the Spirit Bear. But the follow-up article in the same issue, tells a sobering story of how his habitat is under threat from a Pipeline Through Paradise. Throughout history, the peoples of the First Nations have kept this pristine wilderness and its treasured creatures safe. To lose this amazing creature and wilderness would be a devastating loss for us all, not just the Tsimshion people and all black bears who walk with white fur…
