Where the Atlantic Ocean meets the shore of Namibia in Southern Africa, the dry desert heat lifts cool ocean moisture into the air to create areas thick with fog. Attracted to these same sands, a cape jackal (Canis mesomelas mesomelas, a subspecies of the black-backed jackal) takes the same airborne route.

But it’s not technically magic. This is the Skeleton Coast. A place where the laws of Nature prevail as they have for millennia. A place where your spirit is uplifted by the simple act of setting foot on this spectacular piece of the world.

I don’t know, maybe it is magic…

During an unexpected chance to experience Africa, a seed was planted. Nurtured by subsequent forays into wild places, this photographer was born.

Jacques Cousteau said “People protect what they love.” And we’ve all heard that “A picture is worth a thousand words.” So, enough with this. My photography says the rest. Thanks for listening.

Awesome capture!… And I concur… there is magic in the vast emptiness of the Skeleton Coast… where at closer look, it is so full of life!

  • Ah yes… the vastness… so empty it’s full. So unimaginable it must be experienced. So rewarding to get your comments and hear you share my wonderment at the magic of Skeleton Coast. Thank you!

Fantastic. And the plain background is perfect.

  • Thank you George! Much as I love brilliant colorful sun, feel the fog adds a nice mood in the background. And I especially like how it lets you see the little bits of sand falling from his feet. ;-)

Hope you continue to take pics as they make my day, especially living in inner city London

  • What a fantastic comment! As you, my everyday is spent in the heart of a modern city and though Boston is a beautiful town, remote wild places and their creatures inspire me. Alas, my opportunities don’t come as often as I’d like but when they do… thanks to digital, I get 1,000’s of pictures to keep me company between adventures. So I’ll do my best to keep shooting and adding pictures! Thanks for your encouragement and making my day!

Amazing capture. This must have been a sensational experience.

  • Thank you so much. And yes, such an amazing experience. Much as I’d suspect your avatar picture was… cheetahs are my favorite animal. SO envious you’re holding a cub!!!
