As a November day struggles to rise over the horizon, an adult male polar bear looks toward Hudson Bay. He hasn’t eaten since the ice platforms he needs to hunt melted away in spring. So each day now he heads to shore to literally test the waters, hopeful that maybe today… the sea will have frozen enough so he can return to the ice and resume his livelihood for the winter.
