Ursus maritimus, Cape Churchill, Wapusk National Park, Manitoba, Canada
You are looking into the face of a curious cub, known in polar bear terminology as a COY – cub of the year. This is his first year out on the tundra and his mother has provided him well. He’s big and healthy going into winter which hopefully means he’ll be one of the lucky ones. The odds faced by Cape Churchill’s COYs are that only one out of every 3 cubs will survive from their first to their second autumn.

Shot using: Canon EOS 300D (the original Digital Rebel) with Canon EF75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM lens

During an unexpected chance to experience Africa, a seed was planted. Nurtured by subsequent forays into wild places, this photographer was born.

Jacques Cousteau said “People protect what they love.” And we’ve all heard that “A picture is worth a thousand words.” So, enough with this. My photography says the rest. Thanks for listening.

    Adorable!!

  • Thank you Marleia. He was quite a cutie. The sweetest little ball of white fur. In this photo he’d just snuck away from his mom and I think you can see in his curious face that he knows he was a bit naughty to do so. :-)

great shot of this cub. I keep expecting him to pull out a coke and drink it..ha ha. Congrats my nature friend..☺
    -Gene

  • Thank you Jammingene. I so appreciate your Feature and thrilled this little guy (and hopefully his cause) gets his chance in the spotlight. I don’t know about that coke though. He’s still rather fond of mom’s homemade milkshakes. ;-) Many thanks again… I suspect you’re a bit of a friend of nature yourself!

Yes I am a friend of nature. My favorite animal is the white tiger. I really like that bear shot of yours. Nice to see other people who care about nature and it’s animals..☺
    -Gene

  • I could tell you had a soft spot for animals. Thanks for confirming that my “critter sense” is still working. ;-) Would love to see tigers in the wild. They rank high on my must-see-before-I-die list along with emperor penguins. My favorite though are cheetahs. And of course, whatever wild creature is in front of me whenever I’m lucky enough to get out in wilderness!
