You are looking into the face of a curious cub, known in polar bear terminology as a COY – cub of the year. This is his first year out on the tundra and his mother has provided him well. He’s big and healthy going into winter which hopefully means he’ll be one of the lucky ones. The odds faced by Cape Churchill’s COYs are that only one out of every 3 cubs will survive from their first to their second year.
