When they’re young, elephants (Loxodonta africana) look like they’re not quite sure what to do with their trunks. Along a dry riverbed of Damaraland in Namibia, we find this youngster relaxing in the trees, seemingly waving to the other members of his desert-adapted family.

Shot handheld using:
Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens, handheld
Focal length 400mm, 1/400 sec at f/7.1, ISO 400

During an unexpected chance to experience Africa, a seed was planted. Nurtured by subsequent forays into wild places, this photographer was born.

Jacques Cousteau said “People protect what they love.” And we’ve all heard that “A picture is worth a thousand words.” So, enough with this. My photography says the rest. Thanks for listening.

  • Namibia is a country filled with beautiful scenery. And luckily, wildlife too. Now that’s great a wonderful combination when you can get it! Thanks Damienne.

Superb- love the light and dof- gorgeous shot!

  • More thanks to you Rose! So lucky to find these elephants in the harsh, rugged terrain of Damaraland. But their ability to survive and thrive and a landscape that we term unforgiving and stark was remarkable and, in the most honest of ways, simply beautiful. I’m humbled and flattered that your masterful eye enjoys these images and sees some of the beauty this experience shared with me. Very much appreciate your wonderful comments and fav, Thank You!
