The scenery of Sossusvlei in Namib-Naukluft Park, Namibia maybe so unique that you imagine yourself on another planet. Where the sight of a huge bird with four legs and two heads fits right in. But it’s just your angle and the desert sun playing tricks on you as two very earthly Ostrich (Struthio camelus) pause to enjoy the view alongside you.

Canon EOS 40D
Canon EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens

During an unexpected chance to experience Africa, a seed was planted. Nurtured by subsequent forays into wild places, this photographer was born.

Jacques Cousteau said “People protect what they love.” And we’ve all heard that “A picture is worth a thousand words.” So, enough with this. My photography says the rest. Thanks for listening.

Great capture OTN. Yes, it is easy to imagine this to be another planet….the red dunes, but those ostriches are a dead give-away! Great shot!

  • Thanks Olitto. Yes, ostriches can only mean Africa. But then, from where I usually sit, in the heart of the US city of Boston, memories of Africa DO transport me to a completely different world! ;-)

Are you from somewhere in Africa, living in the states now, or were you just visiting or touring Africa before.

  • Nope, never lived in Africa. I just fell head over heals in love with it through travels. Funniest thing is I only went the first time because I got such a great deal on airfare and a safari package. Now I can’t get there often enough. 6 safaris so far with hopefully MANY more to come. Thanks for asking. I’m honored you could feel I could have roots in Africa!

Your images are absolutely fantastic – really superb work.

  • Thank you very much. I always feel like I’m merely a lucky observer who’s gotten the chance to see some wondrous things. I’m happiest trying to bring part of that wonder to others. And I’d be absolutely thrilled if I could inspire even one person to value and strive to protect these natural wonders.

  • So glad you like this Manon and thrilled you find it gives you inspiration! Love your write up for the group. Not only so generous, but puts a special smile on my face as a fellow city girl. Lately I’ve noticed birds I’ve never seen before in the tree outside my kitchen. But how crazy is Nature… my city birds aren’t even as big as these ostrich’s beak. Geez, I don’t even think my kitchen is big enough for one of these ostriches to walk through! ;-)
