Ursus maritimus, Cape Churchill, Wapusk National Park in Manitoba, Canada

After making us laugh with his invigorating and entertaining display of yoga mixed with gymnastics playing in deep snow, it was sad to see him end his “practice” and prepare for Savasana, relaxation pose. But instead of making me sad, he took my breath away by emerging from the shadows of the willows to find a soft blanket of snow, embraced by a spotlight of brilliant sun, where he laid down his head, warmed my heart and touched my soul.

This bear and his other poses can be seen in the calendar Yoga Bear where this one is December’s image. You can also find all images of this guy, by using this link to Yoga Bear images.

Shot using: Canon EOS 300D (the original Digital Rebel) with Canon EF75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM lens
Focal length 300mm, Exposure 1/500 sec at f/8.0, ISO 200

During an unexpected chance to experience Africa, a seed was planted. Nurtured by subsequent forays into wild places, this photographer was born.

Jacques Cousteau said “People protect what they love.” And we’ve all heard that “A picture is worth a thousand words.” So, enough with this. My photography says the rest. Thanks for listening.

    Beautiful image. Love it.

  • Thanks again. After the tremendous show this bear put on for us, when he walked off, found the only spot highlighted by sun to give us this final pose, he melted my heart. And that took some doing since it was easily 20ºC/-4ºF out there! ;)

Awww…I almost want to give him a blanket so he stays warm and a nice soft pillow!!! :-D

  • He does look pretty cozy. After the workout he just had, I suspect he slept like a baby and didn’t get a chance to notice a missing pillow or blanket. I’m sure he appreciates your offer. I know I do! ;-) Thanks for your comment and favs.

Amazing and adorable, beautiful natural light…

  • Thank you Kate. I’m inspired by your profile page. Really opens my eyes to a rich culture and way of life so forgotten (dare I say almost unknown) though it’s so close to home. Your passion, dedication and talent really come through with the pictures and words you’ve assembled there. I look forward to reading more at the sites you’ve suggested and looking through the rest of your work. Thanks for enlightening and educating me.

This just made me cry.. so beautiful and so cute.. polar bears are the most lovely creatures, I feel so badly for their plight…. and you have captured a great moment here. You’re so lucky to have seen it, I’m jealous ! Beauty of a photo, well done :)

  • Penny, what a lovely comment! Your turn to touch me, with your words. I’m lucky enough to say that I’ve looked many wild creatures in the eye. But to trade glances with a polar bear was special beyond description. They look back with a thoughtfulness that stirs your soul. And steals your heart.

You’re so right. So sad their world, their future pays the price for how we’ve changed the balance of Nature. But hopefully enough people like you care enough to make daily decisions that can turn things around before it’s too late.

Thank you so much for caring about these bears’ plight and for your generous comment.
