On the days before and a few hours after we arrived in the Kalahari, it rained. Not what one expects in a desert. So when we went to explore Deception Valley, we knew we’d have to maneuver around dirt roads riddled with mud and puddles. Turning the corner on one particularly bad stretch of track, our driver came to a complete stop sending us… reaching for our cameras. Not that the road was impassible. But who would want to miss the sight (and sounds) of hundreds of thirsty butterflies sending delicate clouds (and hums) of color fluttering all about the road? Not what one expects in a desert.
