Lucy in the Sea with Diamonds by

The sun sets on Boston, nightlights from Cambridge dawn in the reflections on the river and a sea of diamonds light her way along the shore…
The sight of unknown lights in the distance October 1st begged investigation. Turns out, lights were being set up for something October 3rd. I walk this path so often so never thought I’d find “Lucy” setting up a display and testing lights as dusk cast the perfect backdrop.

The Lucy Light Forest is an interactive light and sound experience created to celebrate movement and the women who love it. The forest is a bit larger than a football field and consists of more than 10,000 solar powered LED lights. Amber hues of light and complementary tones of sound are activated by movement through the forest along the DCR’s Charles River Esplanade.

During an unexpected chance to experience Africa, a seed was planted. Nurtured by subsequent forays into wild places, this photographer was born.

Jacques Cousteau said “People protect what they love.” And we’ve all heard that “A picture is worth a thousand words.” So, enough with this. My photography says the rest. Thanks for listening.

This is really lovely. The little fairy lights are so inviting. Beautiful

  • Thank you Karen! I was a ways upriver when these lights in the distance intrigued and “invited” me to take a closer look. So glad I did. With fading sunset light, it was beautiful… Sylvia

I was looking for the girl with sun in her eyes but she was gone and it was night time. What a lovely leading line / path, that draws you into the image.

  • I came from the west, the other end of the path, so didn’t see this perfect point of view until sunset colors had deepened. But then those reflected colors drew me in even more… Thanks for tripping along with me Chris. ;-)

what a wonderful sight, stunning shot Sylvia xx

  • Thank you Lynn! I’d just walked this path couple days before so was completely surprised but thrilled to find it closed while this light forest was coming to life. The path should reopen today so hope I make it down there to walk this sight myself. ;-)

What a stunning image and the writeup quite interesting. Beautiful capture:) Sandy

  • Thank you Sandy! Indeed an interesting light installation that literally popped up overnight along the river. Officially opening to the public today so hoping to head back and learn more interesting things about it. And of course, look for other interesting points of view for my camera. ;-)

wow! for sure you know what beauty is. another fantastic picture!

  • You are the best and I love and so appreciate your comments! This was such a surprise. Was actually prowling the riverside after spotting a heron coming in around sunset a few days ago. Never seen herons in the city before so when one flew by, I him chased downstream and I saw these lights. And when I got there, the sky and river reflections made a scene that left no doubt what beauty was about. ;-) Thank You Manon!!!!!!

Words fail me – this is so beautiful! Congratulations on your feature in WE SELL ART – FAVE:>)

  • What wonderful and cherished words from Mother Nature! ;-) And appropriate…since in my humble opinion it’s Nature light and color that really make this view special. Thank you so very much! …Sylvia
