Zhangmu (Nepali: Khasa), is a customs town and port of entry located in Nyalam County on the Nepal-China border, just uphill and across the Bhote Koshi River from the Nepalese town of Kodari. At 2300 meters above sea level, Zhangmu has mild and humid subtropical climate, which is a rarity for Tibet. Chinese trucks travelling on the Friendship Highway offload goods at Zhangmu and transfer them to Nepalese trucks.
The Friendship Highway (also known as the China-Nepal Highway) is a 800 kilometres (500 mi) scenic route connecting the capital of Tibet Lhasa with the Chinese/Nepalese border at the Sino-Nepal Friendship Bridge between Zhangmu and Kodari. It crosses three passes with altitude over 5,000m before dropping to 1,750m at the border.
