To the north is Lake Geneva and Switzerland, to the south and southeast are the Mont Blanc and Aravis mountain ranges It is noted for its winter sports and the first Winter Olympics were held at Chamonix in 1924.
National nature reserves are designated by the French government as areas where an outstanding natural heritage is present, both rare and typical areas in terms of species and geological elements.
