I’ll admit, I am totally petrified of spiders.
Well, I found this lovely visitor on my screen door one afternoon.
This was by far the biggest Wolf Spider that I have ever seen.
Good thing for me, this huge spider was on the outside of my screen, and not the inside.
Living right on the edge of the woods makes my house a prime target for these things…. Lucky me!

Apparently we have the same taste in music ‘cause I have a similar shot (different kind of spider) with the same title. Who would’ve thought? I digress. I love the scale you’ve given this guy, he looks gigantic! Reminds me of the ones we used to see when I was stationed in Texas. Nice work!

  • Ha… You got the whole song thing… Awesome :-)
Now, as far as his size… It WAS gigantic! It is a Wolf Spider, and easily was close to 4" across. This was the biggest one that I have ever seen. How lucky I am to know that it lives somewhere on the back of my house… lol

A few months ago my girlfriend had an encounter with something called a “Fishing Spider” that was about this size. Apparently it gets its name from the fact that it lives in/near water and often eats small fish. Talk about a “wait… what??” moment! Anyway, I was on the phone with her when it turned up on one of her deck chairs. And this? Is woman who thinks nothing of a possum getting in the house or a deer wandering through the yard or a raccoon strolling up on the porch to steal the cat food. But that giant spider creeped her out a little.

  • Oh I can totally relate to your girlfriend! I honestly can’t think of one animal that scares me. I will hold any rodent, reptile, snake, fish, amphibian, etc… But, when it comes to crabs, beetles, bugs, or flying insects…. well, that’s a whole different story lol
As the matter of fact, I just had this horrible nightmare about a Japanese Beetle last night lol I dreamed that this HUGE Japanese Beetle had burrowed its way into my friends back, and the only way to remove it was for me to grab it with my bare fingers. Needless to say, I was beyond freaked out in my dream, because I just cannot fathom feeling a bug squirming between my fingers! I feel like jumping out of my skin right now just thinking about it… lol

Well we get a good laugh out of the conversation now ’cause my reaction when she told me about the thing was “Get your camera!” (And because she did, she was able to send the photos to the Ag department at NC State University and find out what kind of spider it was.) But we still laugh that my first thought was to photograph the thing. And it was huge. Easily a 4 inch leg-span.
