The Infinite Incandescence ~ Sunset Alaska North Star Winter Scenics
From my collection:
Wilderland ~ Alaska North Star Winter Scenics
A brilliant golden winter sunset in late October 2007 reflects a warm amber glow on the snowmobile tracks, ice and snow covered frozen surface of Chena Lakes, Alaska North Star
“One day the sun admitted,
I am just a shadow.
I wish I could show you
The Infinite Incandescence (Tej) That has cast my brilliant image!
I wish I could show you,
When you are lonely or in darkness,
The astonishing Light Of your own Being!”

Sharon, this is magnificent! I love the golden sunset combined with those fabulous trees! Lovely tones in this image.
Sharon Mau replied
Mahalo dearest Rachel, thank you so much! Chena Lakes is very wild and beautiful. While I was standing here photographing this beautiful and rare golden sunset in winter, I felt the presence of the wolves in the area behind me and had to cut my session short and return up the embankment to my truck. They were very active in the area near North Pole during that time and so many people in the rural wilderness had lost their pet dogs to them. It was quite amazing how one moment I was focused on the sunset and the next I was aware of being watched. Turning and looking over my shoulder I could not see them but I knew they were there. I tried to appear calm and confident and turned and walked directly toward them to my truck above. It was very quiet. And although I was carrying a .44 revolver, I didn’t want to use it and so I was actually a bit disappointed that I had no one with me to watch my back so that I could continue shooting after the sun dipped below the trees. The perils of wandering around alone in the wilderness of Alaska! The memory of my intuitive feelings of the wolves presence will remain with me always.

Great shot, a really nice images of warmth even from a frosty scene. Did you have the camera stopped all the way down to avoid most of the lens flare… f/22 ?
Sharon Mau replied
Mahalo Steve, thank you so much! Good guess!! Here is my camera data below. I experiment with light and many times will set my focal points away from the sun when shooting brilliant sunsets, and then turn and shoot directly facing the sun with interesting results. Often I will focus just above or the to the right or left of the brightest point. It helps to use a polarizer as well, although with this one I did not. It is straight from my camera, handheld with an image stablizer.

Beautiful and ghostly light! Very mysterious and lovely.

Mahalo darling girl!!! It was so wonderful to see a brief and brilliant golden sunset at this time of year in Alaska. As you know, many think of Alaska as the Land of the Midnight Sun. Well, that is true only in summer. On the day of Summer Solstice, it is an enormous celebration as the longest day of the year. Yet, it is also the beginning of the end of summer as well and from that point forward we lost daylight by about 7 minutes per day. And so for many months of the year, especially in December, January and February, Alaska is the land of perpetual darkness!
Late October in the Interior as the darkness was increasing and the temp dropping to subzero and the sun rose and skipped just above and through the trees, then set once again plunging the land into dark deep cold, many times the skies were grey and many shades of pink, lavender and blue for only brief moments. While they were beautiful, to see a golden sunset was a treat!

That is a fascinating story about getting this shot and the wolves watching, Sharon. Thanks for sharing. I read your other interesting comments too. Congratulations on your feature! Well deserved!

Thank you Rachel!! Whatchadoin sweetheart? Aloha!! Here on Maui it is a beautiful, still and very peaceful evening. The palm fronds are so still it is amazing! No wind, there is a bit of vog and I can only see a couple of stars in the night sky. It is relatively warm, perhaps around 75. How are things in your corner of the world?

Argh, you’re killing me, Sharon! LOL! Well I guess you did your time in the cold, much colder than where I am, so you’ve earned your tropical paradise! Your link didn’t work properly for me, but it sounds so beautiful there right now. We are supposed to get snow tomorrow here in Ohio, possibly 2.5 inches where I am. Ugh, I need to live somewhere warm. Enjoy your lovely evening!
