Early morning light on Pa’ako Beach, Maui Hawai’i.
The island of Lana’i is visible on the distant horizon and Oneloa (Big Beach), Makena is in the distance on the right. The division between Big Beach and Little Beach was caused by a lava flow and earthquake in approximately 1790. The hill dividing the beaches is called Pu’u Ola’i or Earthquake Hill.

“At the northernmost corner of the Polynesian triangle, the Hawaiian Islands stand as a sentry for a collection of atolls, volcanic remnants, coral blocks and large islands that punctuate the region stretching to Aotearoa (New Zealand) in the south and Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in the east.
Hawai’i is the newest landmass in Polynesia and the most isolated settled area on the globe, rife with unique ecosystems. Maui, sitting in the middle of the main Hawaiian island chain, is young geologically. Haleakala, still volcanically active in the 18th century and now considered dormant, rises 10,023 feet. The older and more eroded West Maui Mountains are 1.3 million years old. The tallest point at Pu’u Kukui – 5,788 feet – is one of the rainiest spots on earth. Mahalo a nui loa sweetheart, if you are ever on Maui I will take you here. You will love it!! It is a beautiful small beach and in the early morning light the ocean is truly amazing! I watched a Honu (Green Sea Turtle) swimming near me as I sat above on the volcanic rocks and took about 500 shots in the beautiful early morning light. It is always a challenge to choose only one or two to upload. I wish you a sparkling day sweetheart!!

Mahalo Lyn! ‘Ae, it is very beautiful. It is one of my favourite beaches on the island. A small cove, in the early morning and in the evening it is so wonderful to watch the Honu feeding and rolling in the waves and to see the Humpback Whales breeching and leaping into the air at this time of year. That is always thrilling.

‘Ae, the colours are very beautiful at this time of day. At any time of day really, but especially in the morning as the sun is rising over Haleakala (to my right in the image) and when the weather is clear casts the most beautiful aquamarine blue colours from a beautiful blue sky and the ocean is absolutely stunning.

Mahalo Jan, I am delighted you enjoy my work. Pa’ako Beach is very beautiful. I don’t work for anyone. I am a freelance photographer. Thank you so much. Early morning light on Pa’ako is extraordinary on a clear day. The brilliant blue sky is reflected in the ocean and reveals the most amazing aquamarine blue colours. There are Honu, Sea Turtles who feed and play here and it is a favourite place of local families. The keiki, the children play in the shallow tide pools and fish with handheld nets while their fathers fish from the lava rocks. It is a peaceful place. There are many weddings performed here on this lovely small secluded cove. You should travel to the island and I will show you! You will love it!

Aloha Garth, thank you so much. The best light for the beautiful blues is from 1100 to 1400. In the early morning Pa’ako is cast in the shadow of Haleakala. It is also wonderful to watch the Honu swimming and feeding here. It is a beautiful place to swim and snorkel.
