The BMC ADO16 (“Amalgamated Drawing Office project #16”) was a family of small family cars built by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and, later, British Leyland. It was launched in 1962 and for the rest of that decade the ADO16 was consistently the UK’s best-selling car.
Mainly Alec Issigonis’s brainchild based on a larger , family sized Mini and Pinin Farina’s body styling following the clean uncluttered lines he designed for the Cambridge , Oxford and the A40. (Had one of those to!)

Models included:

Austin 1100 and 1300
Austin America, Glider and Victoria
BMC 1100
Innocenti IM3
MG 1100 and 1300
Morris 1100 and 1300
Riley 1300 and Kestrel
Wolseley 1100, 1275 and 1300
XC/9002

Although most of the cars were manufactured in England, they were also built in Spain by Authi, in Italy by Innocenti and at the company’s own plant in Belgium. It was the basis for locally adapted similar cars manufactured in Australia and South Africa.

The vehicle was launched as the Morris 1100 on 15 August 1962
Over 2million where built.
Enough Wiki Fact!
Here’s my bit. ….
I had three of them .. my brother had two.. ! Of course he had to have the MG and the posh Vanden Plas with the Connolly leather
Very comfortable and lovely to drive. Flat floor with a long gear stick to work the selectors for the under engine gearbox. They hugged the road and had great traction in ice and snow. I remember one time,we (the present mrs Oulgundog and myself) driving home in a fierce blizzard, eventually arriving at the foot of the hill to our house. That road is nearly a mile long climbing from sea level to at least 300 feet. …other residents where being towed up by local farmers with tractors .. god bless their red diesel. Our little 1100 didn’t need such charity . From a standing start, she was up that white ice face without a blink from her Lucas sealed beamed eyes.. sorry I mean headlamps.. (little bit of anthropomorphicism there!)
We took her around Cork an’ Kerry one time, with two of our dogs on a dog show trip. Never coughed or spluttered untill up over MacGillycuddy’s Reeks the exhaust broke.. hastly repaired with a coke tin and some wire.
We know how the reeks was added to the mountain range name!
They really were good cars! Sadly they were let down by the lack of foresight in corrosion control..the floors rotted to hell in UK winters and many had to have lots of welding work done. The body’s .. easy on the eye as they were.. harboured the demon rust mite along the joints of the two part wheel arch and the sills.
Mind you this was a well preserved and presented one!

Had a few of these and 1100’s, including one estate that I traded in for…would you believe an Aston Martin (DB2 III Volante)

  • Sounds like a pretty good swap David…apart from the thirsty engine a pretty good bird puller!
