Alec the goose.. or sometimes known as Alec the duck.. for reasons only the poplace of ‘Bilfast’ will know.
A bronze cast sculpture of ‘Alec and a friend’ by artist Gorden Muir in conjunction with ‘The Paul Hogarth Company’ of Edinburgh, Bilfast, and Dublin’ located just at the side of the main entrance,of the famous St Georges Market, …‘Bilfast!’
Alec was a gander ..belonging or ‘lodging’ with a local poulterer in 20’s ‘Bilfast’. He had probably escaped the cleaver by shear audacity, wit, and speed…. not to mention….a lucky duck!
Alec … being a gander , liked a dander.. and he used his love of wander with his other love … ‘childer’! Alec was dying about ‘childer’.. they were on his wave length.. they were fun! Alec knew his vocation in life … take the ‘childer’ to school .. an’ see them home! An have a bit o’quack on the way!
Alec was legend!
The first school lollipop goose!
Alec continued to be the guiding goose in the area of the markets, Cromac Square and Street ( Cromac Square in ‘Bilfast’ being alternative speak for currant square, flys graveyards, Garybaldys with a difference and Eccles cakes!)
…yes 1929… Alec passed on … lorry coming ’round the corner … no one knew who honked first…poor Alec … was taken away!
The whole of the markets,Cromac Square an’ the surronding districts of ‘Bilfast’ went into mourning!
No school childer were involved in the incident…. but the trot to school wasn’t as much fun!
Here’s my problem!
My Grandfather.. in the 20’s …..used to take a lorry load of butter and eggs to the market from Armagh.
Thats how he met my Granny.
Granddad was reputedly one of the founders of a very well known Ulster dairy product company… it’s gold and goes mooo! The add on TV does in no way resenmbles him .. apart from the moustache an’ whiskers!
Now I have to say … !
Nothing was ever said!
But ye can’t help thinking can ye!
