Another angle of this beautiful 1927 Austin Pickup, I photographed at the Clonduff Vintage Rally, Hilltown, Co Down. I think (and I’m only making an educated guess, because I never got speaking to the owner) she is a1927 12/4 with a pickup /lorry body and an 1861cc short stroke engine. Whatever she is ..she’s gorgeous!

I’ve just found info’ about her …She was sold at a classic car auction in Chippenham, Wiltshire, back in March 2011 for £5700…cheap at double that price… seems somebody here bought her..lucky devil!

INFO ‘1927 Austin 12/4 Truck Reg. no. EJ 2222 Chassis no. 39H13 Engine no. 39331L. The Austin 12/4 chassis initially with the 1661cc engine and then late in 1928 with the 1861cc unit, was clothed in a variety of body styles but few trucks were made at the time. Their hard wearing ability meant that many 12/4’s became everyday transport for small businesses and many saloons were converted to trucks. Reliability was the key to the 12/4’s longevity and they were put to a variety of uses. It was no doubt one of the success stories of the era. It is believed that this 12/4 was converted to a truck in 1944, wartime of course and with a shortage of materials ,nothing was throwen away!
The Austin Twelve was designated The Salesmans Joy, and a most ready seller, nearly 70,000 being sold up to 1930. Launched in late 1921, the Twelve owed its success to Austins superior build quality and the soundness of basic design, the model becoming a by-word for indestructibility. The Twelve engine was a five-bearing magneto ignition side-valve four, displacing 1,861cc from 1927 for which the factory claimed 27bhp at just 2,000rpm, sufficient for 40-45mph cruising, at which speed the Twelve returned around 26mpg. Effective four-wheel brakes meant that the Twelve coped with sudden emergencies better than many of its contemporary rivals. Enduringly popular and a very attractive model, the Twelve remains a favourite with Austin enthusiasts.’
