Artist's Description

The House of Stewart…built in 1796 by master builder Samuel Morrison. Situated in the sleepy little village of Ardmillan, Co Down, Northern Ireland. Originally the managers house for the flax mill which processed flax, for the once great Ulster linen industry, now sadly no longer.
But!… it was once the home of a king!
It was the home of a ‘Stewart’ …‘Hammy Stewart!’
‘Hammy’.. short for Hamilton I presume (Cause I don’t think he kept Hamsters .. they weren’t invented then!) a farsighted man… was the king of recycling!
Now, anyone who has ever tinkered with an infernal combustion engine will understand why ‘Hammy’ was a king amongest commen ‘five eights’
Need a bit for the 53 Austin Gohardly? …‘Hammy!’
What about a radiator for a Vauxhall Chugsalot? ‘Hammy!’ Morris from Oxford needs a gearbox? ‘Hammy!’
Yes ‘Hammy’ had it all! Acres of the stuff.
Oh! The Saturday mornings, the oiled and greased peasant stock would gather beneath the great throne, perched three or four scrapped vehicles high! There he would sit on the leather throne , holding court to the wants of the petrol heads beneath. A large man ( or so he seemed to me ) ruddy faced (if my failing memory is correct)
“49 MG Magnette drive shaft an coupling?” “Away over thonder ,luk, tae the corner, an sh’ud be yin yer lukin’”
One may have to translate Ulster/Scots here.
“Dynamo fer a wee Sprite?” "Sure an A ferty yin shid fit it " “Away din there fer a lick an tern rite, jist inder a wee Dauphin, luk see!”

‘Hammys’ security guard consisted of a donkey. A very odd Donkey if I remember.
One particular day, while trying to remove a much needed ‘bit’ under a very precariously balanced Ford, security decided it had an itchy arse! It proceeded to scratch said arse (have to say arse, can’t say ass .. as that would be a relative) on the vehicle i was working on, threatening to bury me in scrap yard heaven!!

My old ‘Angela’ retired to ’Hammy’s’! Maybe her little rebuilt heart beats on in some other ‘Angela’ Who knows.
