Petrel...Warner of Storms. by

The lightship ‘Petrel’. Anchored at Ballydoran, Strangford Lough, Co Down, Northern Ireland.
Petrel, launched in 1968, is now retired and serves as the HQ and clubhouse for Down Sailing Club.
As the name suggests..Petrel…Warner of storms!
Beautiful spring day mid April 2010.
I’ve been working in this area off and on for years… its a dirty job .. but somebody has to do it!

As with all of the coastline of Northern Ireland,Strangford Lough is looked after by the National Trust.

But does this particular Storm Petrel warn of ash storms? You poor sap – or is that sod? But you seem to be holding up. Fine shot – interesting use for this retiree.

  • Its’oul sod’ over here..as in the ‘old country’. …or you can have ..‘bugger aff ye oul sod ye’…roughly means …‘would you kindly leave’….or ..‘ye daft oul sod ye’! …which means…‘you mentaly challenged elderly gentleman’ These phrases are a beginning to understanding Ulster/Scots and can be used to ‘fend off any amourous intensions of Ulstermen in the euphoria of alcohol… or indeed ones own husband!
No didn’t pick up on the ash storm, this is a smokeless zone!

There are some wonderful colours in this shot and that is a vapor trail, but the whole picture is a beauty. Shirley

  • Thank you .. Yep I left the vapour trail as part of the story, in that despite the intrusions of technology, it remains quiet and peaceful done here. Just past the islands at the month of strangford is the beacon for the transatlantic jets. We never hear them, only see the vapour trails. Some clear days they criss cross all over the sky creating their own patterns.

NICE SHOT, CROPPING CAN TAKE CARE OF VAPOR TRAIL, IN FACT I DID SOME ON SCREEN CROPPING AND IF YOU CROP OUT THE VAPOR TRAIL, THE WATER IN FRONT OF THE LEFT MOST BOAT AND TO INCLUDE ONE BOUY MARKER AND THE GANGWAY TO THE RIGHT JUST TO, BUT NOT TO INCLUDE THE MUCKY BANK JUST UNDER THE WALKWAY. IT WILL PUT MORE EMPHASIS ON THE BOAT AND MOORINGS. BOB ;)

  • Thank you Smokey ..actualy I don’t mind the trail or the bank I prefer pics to be natural rather than overworked with, in digital programmes.

THAT’S OK AND I RESPECT YOUR CHOICE, MY SUGGESTION WAS MORE ABOUT CROPPING THAN THAT OF POST PROCESSING THOUGH. THE NICE THING ABOUT DIGITAL IS THE ABILITY TO CHANGE YOUR PHOTO WITHOUT HAVING TO HAVE IT PERMANENTLY FIXED ONE WAY. SOMETIMES A GOOD IMAGE CAN BECOME A GREAT IMAGE JUST BY CROPPING,, IT BRINGS YOUR EYE MORE TO THE SUBJECT MATTER AND CROPS OUT UNNECESSARY VISSUAL NOISE. I HOPE YOU WILL PLAY WITH IT IN YOUR PROGRAM AND JUST TRY IT, YOU DON’T HAVE TO POST IT, BUT I THINK YOU WILL SEE A GOOD IMAGE TURN INTO A GREAT IMAGE, RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR EYES. BOB ;)

  • Thank you for your interest and advice Bob. Actually I much prefer the pic as that moment in time rather than the moment that ‘may’ have been in time. I don’t always conform to the mechanics of the ‘rule of thirds’, and I do like my eye to wander around a picture, and not always zoom into the focal point.
