Artist's Description

1963 Ford Anglia, taken at a vintage rally, In Bangor, Co. Down, ‘Norn Iron’, some 23 odd years ago. Very distinctive little family car with the ‘slopey inwards’ rear window. This one had a 997cc engine with a 3speed and reverse gear box. Very ‘popular’ car. Had a great competition record as well with many rallys and saloon car champs’ under its belt. Was a direct competitor to the ‘Mini’. In the background is a ‘62/63 Singer Gazelle, a relative of the Sunbeam Rapier. I once thumbed a lift in one to Kirkiston race track for a meeting, the young fella driving had borrowed it from his Da! He passed everything on the road and never once got in ’overdrive’ a kind of extra gear in those days .. bit like 5th now … the whole way up the twisty Ards penninsula road. I didn’t get a lift home in it as he ‘pulled’ and I was left with my mate to hike again .. got a lift home in a Morris Minor 1000 that had raced and threw a leg out and limped home on 3 cylinders!!

Photographed across from the old Bangor bus station with Lennons fruit and veg shop in the background. Also can be seen is an Ormo bread van.. its actually a ghost. Many family pet dogs were named after the Ormo bread. Most were called soda! An advertising company and a tv station made lots of money from that name!

I had an Anglia… she was called Angela! She was no ordinary Anglia.. she was a 1200 cc ‘Super’ Anglia.. yes .. finished in dark blue with a go faster cream stripe ,highlighted with a chrome strip up the sides.

I bought her for mega money from Kellys on the Shankill road in Belfast about ‘69! Kellys were famous for ….’Isopon’! Experts! It took me eighteen months to pay off this bargain basement dream machine. But I was working and living with me dear old mum, and earning over 20 quid a week and could still pay for the Eko Ranger guitar from me sister inlaws catalogue(club book).

I often dream of ‘Angela’ .. I ask for forgiveness for the abuse I gave her. Anyone local who knows the Carrowreagh road in Dundonald that leads down into the old Ards TT circuit will know. You can make a car fly up there! Hit those dips at the right speed and its.. up .. up’ away!!

Plays hell with the Macpherson struts ..especially if the wings have been packed with ‘Isopon’! Pretty soon the wheels took on an unusual camber. The wings(wheel arches) where replaced by .. yes .. fibreglass pop riveted ones!!

The place I worked at the time had a garage/workshop, and I was friendly with the mechanic. Poor Angela’s engine wasn’t going to good, so under the guidence of my friend, Angela’s heart had surgery!

New rings, gaskets, big ends, wee ends, and anything a boy racers machine ever needed were assembled for Angela. Nothing was too good for Angelas heart!

After much late night oil burning .. Angela was back to porridge. Oh! aye she could sing! Double the g force at the lights and up the Craigantlet at twice the speed.

Boss asked me to go to Lisburn one day ! Yeah ! I’ll take Angela!

Poor Angela.

Bloody clip on the timing chain came adrift and Angela conked out on the Malone road.. “terribly sorry madam didn’t mean to park my jalopy outside your residence .. ahm… any chance of a push!”

After much ‘hoaking’ in the sump , the timing chain and clip were retreived and re assembled .. took three days!

Angela got new fibreglass wings.
Angela got a new silver paint job from 24 four aerosol tins of silver .. cause silver was the ‘new colour’
Angela went to rest in Hammy Stewarts burial place for abused motor cars, Ardmillen, Co Down.

Forgive me ‘Angela’

Taken around 1990 with a Practica BC-3 Kodakcolour Gold film
