We rode in sorrow, with strong hounds three,
Bran, Sgeolan, and Lomair,
On a morning misty and mild and fair.
The mist-drops hung on the fragrant trees,
And in the blossoms hung the bees.
We rode in sadness above Lough Lean,
For our best were dead on Gavra’s green.

W B Yeats

Twenty five or so years ago, at Naven, Irish Wofhound club of Ireland, lure racing meeting. We brought our Afghan Hounds to race as well. All lure coursing ,with an electric lure towing a plastic bag … yep .. 8 plastic bags were torn apart making these pics. The Afghans were quick and agile .. but once they heard the Wolfhounds pounding up behind them they just veered off. Irish Wolfhounds have big long striding galloping movement …slow .. but eat up the ground.. heavy, but sure footed .. very fast!

This was taken on a Practica BC3 with Ilford B/W film. Aged in the darkroom and scanned from the print.

Great energy. I believe Bran, Sgeolan, and Lomair were Finn McCool’s hounds. My first Weimaraner was named Bran – most people thought it was for a high-fiber cereal. ;-)

  • Sorry for not repling quicker Leslie .. I miss comments sometimes.. its an age thing!;-) yes they were alledgedly “Oul Finns” hounds but whether that was became legend before or after Yeats is debatable! Bran is a great name for dog .. my first GSP was called Finn.. both strange Irish names for Germans!lol

I had a female wolfhound whose father won Best in Show at Westminster. She was awesome! It is a great sight to see these sturdy animals run! Great shot!

  • I thank you Marriet. She was certainly well bred then, Yep, it’s wonderful to see them run and one dosen’t expect such speed from such a big heavy dog like these. The lighter cousin of the Irish Wolfhound, the Scottish Deerhound lifted the honours at Westminster this year.

My girl was only 125 lbs though 32 inches high at the shoulder. I think they are well proportioned. Yes, it was nice to see Hickory win.
